Stülpnagel's cartographic skills and aesthetic sensibility are perhaps overshadowed by the brilliance of August Petermann in the overall Stieler universe. But Adolf Stieler called him"the tireless Captain of our workshop" perhaps a bit of a joke as Captain was then Stülpnagel's rank in the Prussian military. The map is notable for its depiction of the rapidly expanding United States in the year that saw the election of the semi-literate slaveholder Zachary Taylor as President. Alaska is of course shown as Russian territory and the map seems to hint at the possibility of a Northern Passage by what is left uncharted in the Arctic. With Greenland shown as connected to an uncertain part of the American continent. Elegantly engraved with fine original handcolour, the map would make a handsome presentation if matted and framed. To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from San Francisco to New York as seen below measures just 5 cm actual size. The west divided into territories with Indian tribes dispersed throughout as the genocidal of the United States government such as the"Indian Removal" laws continued apace. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the Congress of Vienna created The German Confederation to coordinate the economies of these separate but culturally related German-speaking countries. The Confederation acted as a buffer zone between Austria and Prussia, the two largest and most powerful member states. Nonetheless the rivalry between the two powerful states increased until it finally broke out into the Austro-Prussian War. Prussia won the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 which ultimately led to the collapse of the German Confederation. A few years later, in 1871, most of the former Confederation states were folded into the newly proclaimed German Empire. Switzerland had just undergone a rapid social and economic change known as the Regeneration Movement. Following the French July Revolution in 1830, the Swiss began assemble and call for fair representation and new Cantonal constitutions. Many of the cantons subsequently established representative governments and instituted freedom of the press and trade. The map was published as plate no. 89 in Thomas G. But believed to be a part of the printed report to Congress in 1848-9 by Commodore Shubrick. Folded map. Size 9 3/4" x 17" Folds to 5 1/4" x 9 3/4" Condition: Overall very good. Paper is sound with light agetoning. There are a few small dampstains& some yellowing on folds. Original binding holes in left margin. A fascinating map showing details of a relatively forgotten campaign in the war. In October 1847 Captain Elie A. F. La Vallette of the first-class frigate USS Congress in company with the sloop USS Portsmouth forced the Mexican garrison under Col. Antonio Campuzano at the fort and city of Guaymas to evacuate the city under the threat of bombardment. Following the bombardment. ... moreLa Vallette landed to take possession, to find the city abandoned by its defenders and most its population. With insufficient force to occupy the city, La Vallette demolished the seaward defenses of the port and left the sloop USS Portsmouth offshore to dominate the port with its guns then dismantled the seaward defenses of the city and thereafter controlled the city by the threat of bombardment by a sloop of war kept on station at the mouth of the harbor. In November 1847 an attempt to reoccupy Guaymas, Sonora, by Col. Campuzano was repulsed by a landing party of sailors and marines under Lieutenant W. T. Smith, supported by the guns of the USS Dale. In January 1848- Fabius Stanley from the USS Dale led a surprise attack on the camp at the village of Cochori held by Mexican forces blockading Guaymas. This map appears to document this attack. SURVEY OF THE MEXICAN LINES OF DEFENCE AT CERRO GORDO: A map of the famous Mexican-American War battleground where Major General Winfield Scott defeated Santa Anna's superior army in April. 1847. This map was surveyed on the field by Maj. Turnbull and Capt. McClellan(later Gen. George McClellan, first commander of the Union Army in the US Civil War) The map was included in a report by Pres. Polk to Congress, and this copy presumably was extracted from that report. The map remains in excellent condition for its 167 years. With only minor signs of age or handling. Slight ink bleeding and a thin, closed tear in the left margin are the most significant defects. The image measures 12.25" X 18.75" on a 15.75" X 21.5" sheet.
