This extraordinary unique piece features a very rare arched top with intricate carvings that extend down both sides and on to the feet. You can definitely tell that this particular craftsman had a deep love for his work as this armoire is truly a work of art. In my many years of collecting and researching rare antiques. I have never seen another like it. This gorgeous unit dating to the very early 1900’s was shipped to the U.S. in 2003. It measures 84” Tall by 81” wide and a full 24”deep. The center door is a full 35” wide(again. Extraordinary design) with the side cabinet doors at 20.5“ The armoire retains the original beveled glass mirrors on the face of the center cabinet and on the inside of ... moreboth of the side cabinet doors providing a panoramic view when both side doors are open. The original un-restored dark walnut finish on the exterior and burl panels highlights the blond interior. The unit shows very little signs of wear and the mirrors have the typical haze and spotting that were common of the era. All the hardware is excellent except one door pull that is in need of repair as the clasp that holds it to the door is broken. The original locks on each door are intact but I do not have the key. It can be obtained through any locksmith. This fine example of French craftsmanship breaks down for easy shipping. It is doweled as well as bolted together for a perfect fit when re-assembling and I will include assembly instructions. It is a two person job to assemble and will take approximately an hour. There will be a 150.00 crating and packaging fee that will be added to your final winning bid if you chose to have the unit shipped. The reason being. It will need a special packing crate built from scratch to protect it in transit. And feature 6 classical scenes, each within a cartouche surrounded by ornamental scrollwork. A French master carpenter built this Armoire just 39 years after the Mayflower pilgrims reached our shores in 1619. That was 60 years before Thomas Chippendale ever saw the light of day. Louis XIII was the King of France at the time. That's Louis the Fouis' dad. Whose grandiose gilded furniture is widely copied and even parodied by that clever Philippe Stark in Plexiglas) It's amazing to think that something hand carved out of humble fruit wood should have survived. And is now 118 years older than the United States of America. Amazing but true. The artisan who created ... morethis masterpiece proudly signed and dated it inside one of the drawers: Icy Morre 1658(for reasons unknown. He flopped his"6" which is backwards. Icy Morre lived and worked in the French countryside. In the Chateaux region of Tourraine(from the French"tour" or tower) which is where my mother's family is from; Tours, the provincial capital. According to my mother. This chest has been in our family for over three hundred years. So it's quite likely that an ancestor of mine bought it from Icy Morre directly or, more likely, commissioned it. Think of it as early Louis Vuitton! Icy Morre's workshop had no running water or indoor plumbing. Judging from his hand-writing he was only semi-literate. If he had glass panes on his windows they would have been. At most, 6" wide. and forget about central heating. He would have had to wait nearly three centuries for that! But Icy Morre sure knew how to use a hand saw and a chisel! I muse: He may have had an unpaid apprentice named Jules; an apprentice who dreamed of marrying Icy's daughter after toiling from dawn to dusk for seven years. Jules. Every surface shows tool and planing marks. Carved wooden pegs secure the corners. Crown and doors are removable for easier moving of this historic furniture from southern France. This is a beautiful Louis XV Walnut French armoire. It stands tall and proud and is an impressive piece with rich texture to the wood finish. The motif looks like an eye at the top and an eye on the bottom- quite unusual! The armoire is 24" deep. 54" 4'5" wide, 91" 7'7" tall. We are unsure of the weight but estimate at around 175lbs. Style and beauty of this piece, especially with the Ormolu piece on top and feet. I believe the wood is walnut. The wood on the doors and drawers are a burled pattern. There are matching two nightstands. Twin beds and dresser/ commode which will be listed separately. This piece is in very good condition. Especially considering its age. I have included photographs of a missing piece(which I have) on the mirrored door and two spots on the legs where apparently my previous shih tzu chewed a bit. I did not even know these existed until I took these photos. I’m sure a professional refinisher could make quick fixes of these. French Carved Oak 1780 Antique Armoire. Modern Fitted Interior. This splendid armoire was hand carved of solid wormy oak and chestnut in France about 1780. Every surface is hewn and hand planed. Vine motifs are delicately carved and wooden pegs secure the joints. There are various losses and shrinkage separations from two centuries for antique character. See photos. Gracefully arched doors have original wrought iron hinges. The old finish is very well preserved. It has been waxed and buffed so that all that is needed to preserve its soft luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. A large working lock is about 100 years old but not original. The interior was lined with oak fitted partitions and adjustable shelves about 25 years ago. There are holes for electronic cables through the back. Feet have restorations as is typical.
