This extraordinary unique piece features a very rare arched top with intricate carvings that extend down both sides and on to the feet. You can definitely tell that this particular craftsman had a deep love for his work as this armoire is truly a work of art. In my many years of collecting and researching rare antiques. I have never seen another like it. This gorgeous unit dating to the very early 1900’s was shipped to the U.S. in 2003. It measures 84” Tall by 81” wide and a full 24”deep. The center door is a full 35” wide(again. Extraordinary design) with the side cabinet doors at 20.5“ The armoire retains the original beveled glass mirrors on the face of the center cabinet and on the inside of ... moreboth of the side cabinet doors providing a panoramic view when both side doors are open. The original un-restored dark walnut finish on the exterior and burl panels highlights the blond interior. The unit shows very little signs of wear and the mirrors have the typical haze and spotting that were common of the era. All the hardware is excellent except one door pull that is in need of repair as the clasp that holds it to the door is broken. The original locks on each door are intact but I do not have the key. It can be obtained through any locksmith. This fine example of French craftsmanship breaks down for easy shipping. It is doweled as well as bolted together for a perfect fit when re-assembling and I will include assembly instructions. It is a two person job to assemble and will take approximately an hour. There will be a 150.00 crating and packaging fee that will be added to your final winning bid if you chose to have the unit shipped. The reason being. A French master carpenter built this Armoire just 39 years after the Mayflower pilgrims reached our shores in 1619. That was 60 years before Thomas Chippendale ever saw the light of day. Louis XIII was the King of France at the time. That's Louis the Fouis' dad. Whose grandiose gilded furniture is widely copied and even parodied by that clever Philippe Stark in Plexiglas) It's amazing to think that something hand carved out of humble fruit wood should have survived. And is now 118 years older than the United States of America. Amazing but true. The artisan who created ... morethis masterpiece proudly signed and dated it inside one of the drawers: Icy Morre 1658(for reasons unknown. He flopped his"6" which is backwards. Icy Morre lived and worked in the French countryside. In the Chateaux region of Tourraine(from the French"tour" or tower) which is where my mother's family is from; Tours, the provincial capital. According to my mother. This chest has been in our family for over three hundred years. So it's quite likely that an ancestor of mine bought it from Icy Morre directly or, more likely, commissioned it. Think of it as early Louis Vuitton! Icy Morre's workshop had no running water or indoor plumbing. Judging from his hand-writing he was only semi-literate. If he had glass panes on his windows they would have been. At most, 6" wide. and forget about central heating. He would have had to wait nearly three centuries for that! But Icy Morre sure knew how to use a hand saw and a chisel! I muse: He may have had an unpaid apprentice named Jules; an apprentice who dreamed of marrying Icy's daughter after toiling from dawn to dusk for seven years. Jules. I added a matching cabinet from the same period and same hard heavy oak wood that fitted in there perfectly with four little screws. The old finish is very well preserved with warm antique patina and just enough mars and shrinkage separations from age for character. Waxed and buffed. All that is needed to maintain its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. Hand hewn. Planing marks plus hand cut dovetail joinery show the work of a master craftsman. The wrought iron giant lock and key are original and work. Hand wrought hinges and pulls are beautiful. This European furniture can be disassembled for moving. Early American Furniture Antique Primitive Pine Colonial Armoire Wardrobe @1795
This Spectacular Early American Solid Plank Pine Armoire/Wardrobe is Circa 1795-1825 Of course this piece was all hand made. No doubt by an early American craftsman. It features thick solid pine plank construction.The armoire has tons of character marks and great patina, I restored the finish with a hand rubbed varnish to protect the wood and bring out the gorgeous graining and character marks. The early hand wrought iron nails are exposed.At the door frame front corner faces you can see the two hand made pegs at each corner. They secure the hand made mortise and tenon joinery of the door frames. The entire top has one solid plank of pine which is dovetailed with one large dovetail joint into the sides of the armoire.The blackened graining of the pine is natural and makes for beautiful highlights. The cornice detail which trims the cabinet ... moretop is superb. Another rare and excellent feature is the original hand made clothes hooks which swivel left& right. They are hand-pegged into their support piece. The whitewashed cabinet inside appears to be original. There are also a few tiny remnants of a linen/muslim cloth held by wrought nails inside the cabinet.It appears the cabinet was once lined with linen cloth. The iron lock is original. I had a period style key made,the key is solid brass which I painted to match the hardware.The lock and key work excellently. The hardware is reproduction period style iron hardware.This piece has many nicks. Dings and character marks in the wood, There is an exposed nail on the lower left front corner where a chip of wood has been missing for a long time, I like the fact you can see this nail, it adds tremendous character& history to this piece, I made no attempt to restore this area, I think it is unique! The doors have age related shrinkage gaps where the recessed panels meet the frame, this is to be expected with a such an old piece.The doors close well, I added magnetic catches to secure them. French Carved Oak 1780 Antique Armoire. Modern Fitted Interior. This splendid armoire was hand carved of solid wormy oak and chestnut in France about 1780. Every surface is hewn and hand planed. Vine motifs are delicately carved and wooden pegs secure the joints. There are various losses and shrinkage separations from two centuries for antique character. See photos. Gracefully arched doors have original wrought iron hinges. The old finish is very well preserved. It has been waxed and buffed so that all that is needed to preserve its soft luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. A large working lock is about 100 years old but not original. The interior was lined with oak fitted partitions and adjustable shelves about 25 years ago. There are holes for electronic cables through the back. Feet have restorations as is typical.
