An incredible accomplishment. The foundry work executed in this piece is above reproach- each gilt bronze mount is hand chased to the highest quality, mercury gilded and of outstanding detail. An angular and commanding work, the Armoire is surmounted by a triangular crest that is removable from the body with two dowels on either side- this is flanked by a pair of carved mahogany(replaced) finials. Beneath the projecting crown molding, an incredible gilt bronze mount of an angel riding through ocean waves in a cornucopia pulled along by swans while leaving behind a trail of shells is simply stunning. Flanking this on either side are opposing gilt bronze solider masks. The top is removable. Lifting off of large steel screws inside of the armoire to allow the door to be lifted from it's hinges for easier transportation. On either side of the door, pedestaled on large tapered columns rest large and highly impressive patinated and gilt bronze Classical female heads with bowed ribbon holding her hair back. These are the largest mounts of flawless execution we've seen on a piece from this period, each a stunning work of art in it's own merit. A hand filed steel screw secures each head to the case. Beneath the column, intense gilded Lion Paw's in the Regency manner complete the form. The arched door swings open with use of the original key. Revealing a golden oak interior of four shelves and a single locking drawer. This drawer is hand dovetailed with solid oak secondary woods, when removed revealing an illegible signature in period script along the dust board. Affixed to the top of the armoire on the inside is an old bill of lading from Lawsonia Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, noting it's sale of an"Exist. This extraordinary unique piece features a very rare arched top with intricate carvings that extend down both sides and on to the feet. You can definitely tell that this particular craftsman had a deep love for his work as this armoire is truly a work of art. In my many years of collecting and researching rare antiques. I have never seen another like it. This gorgeous unit dating to the very early 1900’s was shipped to the U.S. in 2003. It measures 84” Tall by 81” wide and a full 24”deep. The center door is a full 35” wide(again. Extraordinary design) with the side cabinet doors at 20.5“ The armoire retains the original beveled glass mirrors on the face of the center cabinet and on the inside of ... moreboth of the side cabinet doors providing a panoramic view when both side doors are open. The original un-restored dark walnut finish on the exterior and burl panels highlights the blond interior. The unit shows very little signs of wear and the mirrors have the typical haze and spotting that were common of the era. All the hardware is excellent except one door pull that is in need of repair as the clasp that holds it to the door is broken. The original locks on each door are intact but I do not have the key. It can be obtained through any locksmith. This fine example of French craftsmanship breaks down for easy shipping. It is doweled as well as bolted together for a perfect fit when re-assembling and I will include assembly instructions. It is a two person job to assemble and will take approximately an hour. There will be a 150.00 crating and packaging fee that will be added to your final winning bid if you chose to have the unit shipped. The reason being. The old finish is in very fine condition with glowing warm patina and just enough mars and wear for antique character. Waxed and polished. The artisan who created ... morethis masterpiece proudly signed and dated it inside one of the drawers: Icy Morre 1658(for reasons unknown. He flopped his"6" which is backwards. Icy Morre lived and worked in the French countryside. In the Chateaux region of Tourraine(from the French"tour" or tower) which is where my mother's family is from; Tours, the provincial capital. According to my mother. This chest has been in our family for over three hundred years. So it's quite likely that an ancestor of mine bought it from Icy Morre directly or, more likely, commissioned it. Think of it as early Louis Vuitton! Icy Morre's workshop had no running water or indoor plumbing. Judging from his hand-writing he was only semi-literate. If he had glass panes on his windows they would have been. At most, 6" wide. and forget about central heating. He would have had to wait nearly three centuries for that! But Icy Morre sure knew how to use a hand saw and a chisel! His gorgeous super high end French Armoire from the early 1700s has large marror doors on large steal henges. With fancy hand carved simbils on the top& midle of the doors. I added a matching cabinet from the same period and same hard heavy oak wood that fitted in there perfectly with four little screws. Used it for the last 15yrs to lock up my silver and gold, extremely functional& desirable. Size 28" deep, 57" wide, 86" tall. I'm starting the bid at $1400. Which is less then half of what I paid for it in the 1990s. This is an incredible piece of furniture to own. Should retail for around $5k to $7k. Hi! This is an authentic pre 18th century antique from France. It has wonderfully curvaceous legs and is hand carved out of solid wood. No veneers or partical board like the reproductions. The bottom is constructed of plank boards held together with wooden pegs. Metal brackets were added recently for extra support. I believe the upholstery as well as the nail heads to be original. Magnificent cabinet with beautiful lines! Look at these doors! The upper decoration is carved. Not just applied, and it mirrors the incised carving on the bottom in a lovely way. A few years ago, when everyone wanted to hide huge TV's, big armoires like this cost $7-10K. Prices have come down a lot-so if you need some storage, and you love this look you can have a beautiful French armoire for much less! Uses might be: shelving for the family room(games. French Carved Oak 1780 Antique Armoire. Modern Fitted Interior. This splendid armoire was hand carved of solid wormy oak and chestnut in France about 1780. Every surface is hewn and hand planed. Vine motifs are delicately carved and wooden pegs secure the joints. There are various losses and shrinkage separations from two centuries for antique character. See photos. Gracefully arched doors have original wrought iron hinges. The old finish is very well preserved. It has been waxed and buffed so that all that is needed to preserve its soft luster is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. A large working lock is about 100 years old but not original. The interior was lined with oak fitted partitions and adjustable shelves about 25 years ago. There are holes for electronic cables through the back. Feet have restorations as is typical. The mirror at some points show age where the reflectance is opaque; there was termite damage many years ago it is not active now and this piece has been treated to make sure all is clear. The wood is solid and not hollowed out by termites. It will perform well. The bottom floor of center was replaced recently. Bronze foliate crest with ormolu accents, central door with string inlay framing the single beveled mirror and hand carved shelves, doors and holders all support the age stated above.Each shelf and holders are matched and show differences from others. The tedious inlay goes without question of the time it took to make this unique piece of furniture. There is one center door with a huge beveled mirror on the outside. It is flanked by two smaller doors with string inlay and carved decoration on the outside and mirrors on the inside. The corners of the doors have inlay that appears like the rays of the sun spreading out onto the face of the armoire. This armoire boasts 8 feet that are all covered with beautiful bronze ornamentation. Its monumental size is 98' h. x 81 1/2' x 23 1/2' Please make sure your home can take its height. I did not and that is why I am selling it. I live in a typical Florida home and lack the grand type living room. Shipping and moving: Well.
