Bishop & Babcock Mfg., Cleveland. Red Cross Name Plate from Soda Fountain
The Bishop& Babcock MFG. Co. Cleveland. Metal plate(appears to be copper) with porcelain company logo attached. Plate is diamond shaped with holes at each end for mounting. The porcelain center has the company name along with a large red cross in the center. This company manufactured mechanical soda fountains around the 20's until? I do not know the date of this particular piece, but it appears old. Condition: Porcelain area is in very good condition. Metal piece on which it is mounted is discolored. But is a bright copper color under the discoloration. Piece was manufactured with a very slight curvature as if to mount on a slightly rounded surface. Size: Metal piece from point to point is approximately 6 3/4" long. And 3" wide at the center points. The porcelain logo has a diameter of 2 3/4" which calculates to a circumference ... moreof 8.6" I am by no means an expert on this item. But will try to answer questions to the best of my ability. This is a relic of the True Cross. Vraixe Croix. It measures 1 1/2" long. Including the bale, and 1 1/8" wide. On the front is written SANCTUS CRUCE DOMINUS JESUS CHRISTE, Latin for Holy Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ The wax seal and threads are perfect. On the back in black ink is written 326 and 1923. 1923 is the year. And 326 is an identification number. This rare relic comes from the estate of a French Archbishop. Who had an extensive relic collection. The family requested that his name, Diocese/city NOT be made public, although I will give this information to the relic's new custodian, along with a short biography. And it has been neatly cleaned by him. He recently had it professionally sharpened by Wenzloff& Sons of Oregon, who are a small and very skilled handsaw manufacturer. Condition of the blade is good to very good. With some scattered and very very faint pitting. There are no kinks in the blade. The handle shows some wear from use. Including to the nickeling on the nuts, and the upper horn had cracked or split off at some time in the past, and has been glued back together. SHIPPING HAND SAWS: This is a nice saw. 37 vintage/antique hand saws lot. very nice selection of old pieces there are many various markings/dates/patd etc. on these saws blade and or medallions. majority are marked either Disson. Or warranted superior. but there are many more like Atkins, simonds.Bishop,keen kutter etc. below is the description of the lot.please take sometime to read. some have more description than others 1 simonds marked 2.00 on the medallion. Blade etching marked Simonds London England. And other writings not well visible.has 22 inches blade, 11 ppi, saw weight 1.3 lbs. Widest blade width is 5 inches, blade is not straight handle is stable and firm but has some marks.Scratches, black markings,white paint and some chipped area. also some rust on blade. 8 saws marked D-8 etching on blades. Antique Victorian Fairing Pin Or Trinket Oval Box With Bishop's Miter And Cross
On auction we have a ceramic antique pin or trinket box. The base has raised leaves and scrolls while the lid has a Bishop's miter. Cross and scepter. The lid has small flowers around the edges. The box measures 2 3/4" wide, 2" deep and 2 1/2" tall to the top of the hat. It has no maker's mark. My antique dealer tells me this was probably made in Germany in the late 1800's. He says this is a fairing. Made for the English Victorian fairs as either a prize to win or a souvenir to purchase. We consider this to be in very good condition for it's age and use. The gold gilt trim on the miter is worn and there are small chips. Mostly on the flower trim. A very strange repair has been done on the cross. The base has no flaws.
