Weighs over six pounds(2.8 kilos) Chemin de Grande Communication was once a classification for important roads throughout France and introduced in 1835. It was withdrawn and replaced by other classifications in 1930. Earliest signs or route markers were in cast iron or carved into stone or cast in concrete. This is a very early enamel example from the late nineteenth century. Existing examples are extremely rare. Road widening. Redundant classifications, demolition and rebuilding. Enamel exam ples are the least common as they were made only for a short period and easiest to remove. If you want to see images of a variety still existing in France then visit panotheque.free.fr/Fonte/Fonte.html There you will see just how uncommon enamel examples are. If you want to do further research then Google plaques de cocher(coachman signs) Auxi Le Chateau is a town with a population of around 3000. This auction is for a rare antique/ vintage French enameled sign for Inspections Est et Ouest(Inspections East and West) Ca 1900- 1920. The motif of a French hunting horn on the sign indicates that it was used in some areas of a forest. For fox or boar or deer hunting. Hand painted signature of manufacturer" Levrey Freres- Besancon" Besancon is an old city in eastern France. Hand painted blue trim around the border. Raised black letters. The sign has a convex shape. Dimensions: 9 3/4" x 6" Weight: 3/4 pound. In excellent vintage condition. Shiny enamel. There is a small spot on top right edge with a bit of enamel loss. This is a large vintage French enamel road sign dating back to 1958. The figures are in a lovely old dark blue raised enamel typical with French road& street signs. It measures 90cm x 90cm x 90cm and has a depth on the side edge of almost 3cm. On the back it has the name of the enameller and the date 1958. As you can see in the photos. It is in pretty good condition having rusting which is consistent with age and exterior use. It has a section on the back near the top which would make it easy to wall hang if needed. A classic and traditional vintage French blue and white enamel house n° sign. Just perfect if you live at N° 18 Or have a friend who does. It measures 10 x 15 cms. 6 x 4 inches. It weighs 216 grms. 4 good holes at each corner for attaching. There are no dents or dings. Good weathered condition. Some discolouration from age. Very clear and crisp'18' detail. There are some light signs of old corrosion. The odd light nibble. These are all showing in the various photo's. Very French and stylish. This is not a repro.
