The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper cabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. See picture) There is also significant wear to the felted writing surface. No other significant damage or repairs. The entire desk stands about 88" 7'4" tall. MID 18TH CENTURY C. 1740-60 Exceptional state of preservation- retaining original brasses and untouched feet Only the desk is being offered in this listing. The chair shown to give a sense of scale Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably well preserved English Georgian Mahogany Kneehole Desk from the third quarter of the 18th century. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk. Just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. The wide top drawer pulls out to reveal a full dust shelf. Massachusetts solid figured cherry Chippendale desk on ball and claw foot skirted apron frame with the finest scale and proportions. This is an absolute gem of the Upper Connecticut River Valley discipline of furniture making and joinery. The dovetailed sets on this case are just the tightest most precise works you'll ever find on a true Colonial American piece. The apron on the frame base has the best form scrolling and elegant tall gracefully raked legs terminating in the best ball& claw legs. Most interesting is the original American cotter pinned brasses. This marks an important epoch in Upper Ct River Valley case pieces where brasses were near impossible to import from the usual English sources we commonly see on American furniture. The brasses are both elegant and charming simplistic very early American made specimens. To find cotter pinned brasses like these original to an 18th century piece is both noteworthy and very important. Any American 18th century cases on original frames immediately signifies something very special and important to period American furniture collecting. The work lid and drawer face are all molded. The interior of the desk is laid out in a step back semi amphitheater form with drawers possessing molded bases and a nice series of document cubbies. The case is completely correct and absolute original to the frame. Its simply a remarkably beautiful piece we couldn't possibly be prouder of. It is 38 1/2" long, 19" wide and 41 1/2" tall just perfect in scale. Sorry our pictures picked up some shade shadows as we desire natural sunlight to give our pieces their truest color representations. There are no black marks on the case!
