Description: This listing is for a ... moreChippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with brass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. As his cases will typically feature exposed dovetail drawer dividers in the Newport manner, and the pidgeon-hole gallery will regularly featur

We have since found out through an online appraisal company that ... moreis is an Antique Drop Front Writing Desk" from around 1900-1915. But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. The secretary can be found on page#131 in the 80th edition of the Ethan Allen Treasury of American Traditional Interiors. Ethan Allen describes their Georgian Court line as having. Intricate details crafted by skilled aritsans in fine cabinet woods such as solid Cherry and carefully selected veneers. The secretary top measures 36" wide x 46" high x 10" deep and features beveled glass doors as well as two adjustable cherry wood shelves that are grooved for china display. The secretary base measures 36.5" wide x 41" high x 19" deep and features five drawers and a drop front with lock with key. There are cubbies inside the desk base as well as two drawers. The drawers are very clean inside. This secretary was manufactured in January. 1980 and is in excellent condition overall with a few exceptions. There are light dings and one more noticeable ding on the front of the secretary where it drops down(see pics#10, 11) There are also a few tiny chips low on the front two feet and one chip on the very back side of the secretary top. It is not very noticeable when it is against the wall, unless you are looking at the back(see pic#12) The Ethan Allen name is stamped in the top drawer and the date as well as the item number are stamped on the back. Ethan Allen manufactures high quality investment grade furniture that can be passed down through generations. The desk top measures 18" x 24" Total length is 34" Seat height is about 14" The desk is a number 3 size. I do have a few 2 and 5's available. These desks are in fair/ ok condition. They all have varying marks. Dings, etc. The pictures look a little better then they do in person. They are still good desks with a lot of life. But I want the buyer not to expect a new desk. They all need a good cleaning. Some small scaling stated in the crack of the chrome legs underneath. If they were perfect, they would be a lot more expensive: The picture is to show an average condition of the units. Listing local pick up.
