Inside you can fit lots of glassware. Barware, a coffee and cocktail station for your parties, or use as a pantry cupboard, as a desk for your laptop, as a tuck-away office space, as a valet cabinet for clothing and accessories, or as a stand for your television, computer and audio equipment. The inside dividers are mixed woods. The backer is thin plywood, and there's a small hole in the upper back so you can pass an electric cord inside to add a light, power strip, etc. There is an old lock mechanism on the side of the cabinet for the tambour, but I do not have a key. Age estimate of this piece is mid century, likely 1940's- 1970. The only mark found is on underside"MADE IN YUGOSLAVIA" It has age-appropriate wear and some stains on the wood top and the work surface. There is some wear to the back edges of the veneer on the sides. It has not been cleaned up. Overall, it presents fairly well. It is a very heavy piece of furniture. It has been refinished in a medium to satin sheen gloss dark reddish-brown mahogany stain. This desk has hand-cut dovetails across the top, like the early construction desks do, a breadboard writing surface that opens up to reveal two slide supports and a gorgeous interior with curved dovetail drawers, a raised beveled center door and center column drawers. It even has a key. The base has curved front drawers with wooden knobs, all dovetail, and the pillar drawers across the top, which means there are two smaller drawers across the base and three drawers in the bottom. There are also heavy-duty detailed claw feet. The overall size is 36 inches wide, 21 inches at the deepest point, and 42 inches high. The writing lid is 31 inches from the floor when opened, and the lid itself is 34 inches wide and 15 inches deep. This fantastic Burl Walnut Victorian Slant Front Secretary Desk with Bookcase Top breaks down into two pieces for transport(bookcase top and bottom base with desk) is full of character, has many lovely design details and a spectacular warm finish. The bookcase top is graced with a beautiful crown moulding accented with lovely burl-clad scalloped moulding. Three raised horizontal burl panels are found beneath the crown moulding and additional vertical burl accents are found on the sides of the glass doors which are adorned with picture frame moulding. Elegant incised fan carvings accent the outside corners of these glass doors. There is an intact lock on the glass doors and a decorative(non-working) key is included to assist in opening the doors. Three adjustable shelves that measure 37” long by 8 ½” deep provide display and storage opportunity. The elegance continues on the slant front desk door which is graced with a lovely large raised burl panel and has an intact lock with a decorative(non-working) key. You will notice that there are additional burl accents along on the sides of the desk door. This elegant slant front desk door opens to reveal a black felt writing surface with Greek Key trim along with five small birds-eye maple front drawers with wooden pulls and Knapp-joinery. And five pigeon-hole slots with birds-eye maple valances. This raised burl panel detailing found on the elegant slant front door is repeated on the large center drawer and on the bottom doors. The large center drawer has Knapp-joinery construction, an intact lock, and period brass pulls. The lovely bottom open to reveal a storage shelf.
