There is a metal foot inside the top of the desk which allows it to be a flat surface if one wishes it to be. On top of the desk is a divot for writing utensils, and inside is another shelf for writing utensils as well as a small hole I believe could be for a small inkwell. The desk is 29 inches tall at the back, and the chair seat is 15 inches tall and 28 inches tall total.
