Welcome Map and Oil collectors! Thank you for looking at our vintage Minnestoa maps. Up for auction are these 2 vintage Minnesota state road maps. One is from Standard Oil(1956) and one from North Star Gasoline(1962) Both maps measure about 4 1/8" x 9" folded. And about 28 3/4" x 18" unfolded. They are both double-sided. The Standard Oil map has some browning in the image area and the usual holes where the folds intersect(photo#8) The North Star map has fewer holes and is in better condition. These maps display well for their age and are great examples of the free promos that were given out by gasoline stations in years past. DESCRIPTION: You are bidding on a set of road maps covering the entire United States issued by the Esso(today Exxon) oil company. The maps were distributed by the Esso Touring Service and are in the original mailing folder. The maps are"Northeast United States. Southeast United States, and"Central and Western United States. Each map is double sided. They measure 34 by 24 1/2 inches open, folding down to 8 1/2 by 4 1/4. The maps are not dated, but population information is from the 1940 census, and in New Mexico the town of Los Alamos is named, a top secret installation during WWII that never appeared on a map until after the war. These are original oil company road maps published in the late 1940's. Not reproductions. CONDITION: The maps are in the original mailing folder. I cleaned out an old estate in NE Iowa and found a bunch of old raod maps. Many advertise oil companys such as Shell. Standard, Skelly, Billups, Chevron, Conoco etc. There are a couple AAA also. There are a couple maps from Mexico, 1 from Ontario and the rest are USA states and cities. Some have writting on them, some have normal signs of age, wear and folding. I have found some more since I photographed these and I may find nore, I will send what all I find. A couple are rougher than the majority. READY MADE COLLECTION OF VINTAGE OIL COMPANY ROAD MAPS AND BROCHURES
Up for auction is a ready made collection of vintage oil company road maps. If you remember. These maps were given away at gas stations and used for road trips with the family. I don't think they even do this anymore. The collection contains a total of 28 maps and 12 brochures and include maps from Esso, Sun Oil, Gulf, Standard Oil and Sunoco. Some of these are very hard to find and go as far back as the 20's, 30's, 40's(WWII) and the 50's-60's. Examples include: 1939 NYS Worlds Fair Info Map 1964-1965 NY Worlds Fair Tourguide Map Esso War Map II by the Esso Marketers NYC and Long Island Info Map Wildlife in Alaska As far as condition, I would say overall they are in excellent condition. I have owned these maps for over 20 years but I believe the person I bought them from was also a collector. Unfortunately he wrote ... morestuff in pen on the backs of many(but not all) to help him id them such as dates and if they include pictures. I have included a photo to give you an idea of what I mean. I have not opened any of the maps so I don't see any major rips or tears however they have yellowed and do have some foxing from age. Alaska is a little folded but not creased due to its large size. I have had them stored in a cedar chest for most of the time I have owned them to keep them safe from bugs so if a cedar smell offends you please take that into consideration. As I said, even with the wear noted this is a great collection of vintage maps and I believe the new owner would be very pleased. U.S.A. Bidders only please All sales are final but I guarantee the items to be as described. In total this lot is heavy so I think the safest most economical way to ship would be in a priority medium flat rate box including tracking and insurance for $14.50 in the continental U.S. There are lots of maps here so if you have any questions or want more pictures just ask. Map Lot #2: 1960's ATLANTIC Road Maps - Lot of 5 + 1, 1940's Road Map
This auction is for a small lot of Atlantic Refining co. Road Maps from the 1960's and 1940's There are six maps total. Five from the 1960's, one from the 1940's The maps depict various locations throughout the U.S. Georgia/Florida. Delaware/North Carolina/South Carolina, Ohio/Indiana. Florida, and Baltimore. Condition of the maps varies from fair to excellent. The Florida map has discoloration on the front cover. And the Florida, Georgia, and Carolina maps have one, wavy crease on the inner map and back cover. The Baltimore map has a fold on the lower right corner. And a light, wavy crease on the front cover. The Ohio/Indiana map is the best of the entire lot. This map looks like it was never opened and does appear to be in near mint condition. The 1940's map has the most condition issues: a torn hole about 2 inches wide ... moreon the upper left cover(appears as a hole on the map) several creases on the front cover. Writing on the back cover, and crimped edges around the entire map when opened. Shipping service will be Media Mail for this item. Very nice set of 3 maps in a vinyl snap case. This set is from"Golden Fleece Petroleum. On the back of two of them. It reads"Golden Fleece Service Stations and Restaurants throughout Australia give GOLDEN SERVICE-nothing less" and has a nice photo of a family in the restaurant. Also says"Proudly Australian" The third map says"People drive hundreds of miles to eat in our restaurants. This is a very unique set of maps and advertising for a company that is no longer around! It's also a great piece of Australian history. You can own it today! According to Wikipedia. Golden Fleece was a brand of petroleum products and service stations operated by H.C.Sleigh and Company. A partnership was founded in. In 1893 by Harold Crofton Sleigh(1867-1933 shipowner and merchant. and(1828-1902 manufacturer and shipowner) In ... more1913 the company took delivery of its first consignment of motor spirit from the United States and marketed it in Australia as"Golden Fleece" Initially. Motor spirit was sold in drums only, the first Golden Fleece pump being installed in 1920. Golden Fleece was a pioneer of single-branded service stations(as opposed to the more common multi-brand offerings of the era) and its distinctive"golden merino" trademark was soon a common sight for Australian motorists. The post-war era saw a massive expansion of Australia's motor industry and car ownership soared. The company was made public in 1947.
