Ca. 18 1/4 x 14 inches, bound in 3/4, dark green leather and dark green cloth, lots of gilt stamping on 6 panelled spine which also has raised bands(second panel from top has title and bottom of spine is stamped New Edition) gilt on front cover with title and decorative eagle and stars and the words American Edition, and gilt rules, rear cover has gilt rules, also all page ends are in gilt, 32 page introduction, 56 maps and plates listed and 70 page index. Book is in very good condition with ... moreminor edge wear and some cloth rippling of rear cover which could probably be loosened and re-glued. Still a very attractive large dark 3/4 green leather binding with decorative gilt and an uncommon edition at that. The pages are all thick stiff paper and the maps are all lithographed in colors and printed on one side of the sheet only. Most are on tabs in two pages with no breaks between the pages. Some maps are single paged and still on tabs. There are 17 maps relating to the United States. Many are two paged and cover geographical areas but some are single paged and focus on a single state. Antique Crams World Atlas 1889 with all maps intact
The cover on this atlas is rough and two pages in the front have had some of the flags removed.Pages,5,6,7,8 have parts missing.The only other damage on the inside is a tear on the page edge of the map of New Jersey but as fas as I can see all the other maps are intact.It measures 12" X 15" and has 268 pages. Earlier editions of the atlas produced in this partnershikp are a somewhat curious mixture- some are German language reprints of earlier Stieler maps dating as early as 1826 but just as many are Swedish language maps compiled in the 1830s by the Uppsala-based historian and geographer(1788-1852) By this point. Antique Geographia World Maps Alexander Gross pre 1922 LARGE COLLECTION
I am offering for sale my own LARGE collection of approx. 125 Alexander Gross Geographia World Maps I believe these all to be of a single publication date of between 1918 and 1922. With earlier Geographia maps having no publication or Cumberland date code I cannot be totally sure of the exact date. However the subject of some of the maps fully support this date. For Instance the maps of the German Colony Repossessions, and Ireland before Partition. These maps were produced centre folded to be edge mounted. But these have always been loose so have not suffered any perforation. There is as expected some edge discolouration and moisture marking on the paper consistent with their age. But this has not affected the quality of the printed image. In fact for 90 plus years old, they are remarkable, with none of the damage to the fold you would normally ... moresee, and no sunlight fading. I initially intend to sell these as one lot. As to find a collection of this size is now very uncommon, and it would be a shame to split. Individual sheets if you look worldwide. Are achieving very good prices of between £15- £40, as they make ideal candidates for framing. 1768 Anders Åkerman-Fredrik Akrel World Atlas 30 Maps Pre-Cook Cartography RARE!
Atlas Juvenilis eller Geographiska Chartor Oblong Quarto. 30 copperplate engraved maps, 20 cm x 16 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Johann Edmann. Uppsala, 1768, 2 added maps 1789& 1796) We are pleased to offer this example of a world atlas by Swedish engraver and cartographer Anders Åkerman(1723-1778) featuring 30 finely engraved miniature maps. Åkerman was based in Uppsala. And is known as the"Father of Swedish Globemaking" for his production of terrestrial and celestial globes although he also produced atlases and nautical charts. Examples of his are found in the Royal Academy of Science in Stockholm. And an impressive armillary sphere made by Åkerman can be viewed from an Italian museum collection in Milan. Interestingly. The atlas has two maps that have been inserted to replace Åkerman's original ... moreplates- a map of France by the eccentric Uppsala geographer Daniel Djurberg(1744-1834) dated 1796 and the map of Sweden dated 1789 by Åkerman's partner in map and globe production Fredrik Akrel(1748-1804) Akrel took over the business after Åkerman's death in 1778 and is believed to have reissued this 1768 atlas with these two"updated" maps around 1798 in hopes of getting some more mileage off the then 30-year-old plates. The atlas has in the front endpapers the signature of Jonas Frisk(1787-1849) and the date of 21 August 1799 when he would have been 12 years old- Frisk went on to build a very successful business in Stockholm as a furniture dealer and mirror manufacturer. It also bears the signature of another Jonas Frisk and the date 1873. Presumably a grandson, as well as a"Rusti Rasti" Strength in Justice) bookplate with an undecipherable signature. The back endpapers have a meticulously recorded manuscript list of world city populations from Nanking at#1 with 1,500,000 to Königsberg at#49 with 70,000 residents. It is a revised edition illustrating the new boundaries and territorial changes effected by the Peace Treaties from World War One. The book measures 14" x 10 ¾" It has a red cloth covered hardcover, with black lettering. There are 40 plain backed maps. Which would be suitable for framing if required, plus a 32 page index to place names. The maps are printed on a high quality smooth paper. But the index pages and endpapers are a softer and thicker type of paper. The map pages are in GOOD CONDITION. With only slight signs of general ageing and no tears or marks, apart from Map 1(The World) which has a tiny burn mark(see photo below) The endpapers have light foxing and a few small edge chips. These are 2 separate maps. The first is of New Guinea& Papua. And the second is of the Pacific Ocean. My father-in-law was stationed in New Guinea during World War 2, and these were his maps. They were printed by the Robinson company in Sydney. There are no dates on them. They are in fair condition and must be at least 70 years old.

Offering a magnificent 1934 German Der Grosse World Atlas with 24 beautiful hand colored detailed maps all in German. The atlas measures approx 14" X 19" but some of the maps pull out to 46" and many of them are fold out. All of the maps are in great condition except for the"Afrika" map which has two minor crease tears that have been taped to prevent further damage. I could only post 12 photos but have photos of all of the maps. Please remember that I do not grade my items and you are bidding on what you see in the photos. Up for auction is a rough. But still fascinating copy of S.G. Goodrichs A PICTORIAL GEOGRAPHY OF THE WORLD. Comprising a System of Universal Geography, Popular and Scientific. Published in New York by Tanner& Disturnell, according to vignette title page, but publisher listed as C.D. Strong on functional title page. Published in 1840. Second edition. A comprehensive and richly illustrated pre-Civil War geography book, with scores of inset illustrations of animals, locations, mountains, rivers, and many inset maps, although no full-page maps. Includes lengthy sections on each state and its history, and then histories of the major countries of the world. Particularly profusely illustrated with images of the animals inhabiting particular regions. This is a scarce and very early edition of Goodrichs Geography, and quite possibly the first. ... moreTurner and Disturnell is an exceedingly rare and short-lived publisher, and there are no other editions listed. All text is present, as later editions were often split into two volumes. Complete in one volume. 493 pages. Book is in poor condition. While pages are all present, the green cloth has been removed from the front cover and spine, and is present, but peeling on the rear. Somehow, book is still holding together; while hinges are tender, all is attached. Title page and table of contents are detached. Last forty pages have a waterstain extending halfway down the page. Leipzig, 1837, original hand colour We are pleased to offer this scarce and important 19th century German atlas(Espenhorst PPII 31.1.1.2) compiled under the direction of the renowned Prussian military cartographer and Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Streit(1772-1839) The atlas was printed by the Hinrichs book publishing firm under the distinguished imprimatur of the German cartographer Dr. Christian Gottfried Daniel Stein(1771-1830) as it had its genesis as an accompaniment to Stein's influential Handbuch der Geographie. Jürgen Espenhorst in his magisterial study of 19th century German atlas production Petermann's Planet notes that Stein never contributed any cartography to any edition of the atlas ... moreyet"Stein" atlases such as this example were marketed decades after his death. While Stein never had anything to do with a single map. His Handbuch went through seven editions from 1808 to 1872 so the marketing strategy was probably intended to feed off the prolonged success of that work and to have a"name" like Stieler associated with the subsequent editions of the atlas. Discerning collectors will instantly recognise the scarcity of this atlas- indeed. Of the eight editions Streit issued annually between 1832 and 1839 only 23 extant copies have been identified by Espenhorst. The rather lavishly-produced atlas includes extensive text commentaries and statistical tables related to the maps while the maps are of course elegant copperplate engravings with delicate original hand colour. Most masterfully engraved by the Leipzig artist and engraver Heinrich Leutemann Sr. whose Heinrich Leutemann Jr. enjoyed considerable fame as an artist in the second half of the 19th century. Atlas is filled with original old colorful maps. State historical data, Country historical data and statistics, Population data, etc. Condition is poor with the cover separated. Exterior spine missing, damage to some pages, and browning/toning to edges. Atlas does appear to be complete and is approx 220 pages- the vast majority of the pages are intact, but many of the first are separated from the spine.
