Published in Edinboro& London by W. A.K. Johnston. 1883. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. It was drawn by Alexander Keith Johnston(1804-71) who formed the business with his brother William Johnston. They became the most respected Scottish cartographers and map publishers of the19th century, producing the most detailed and accurate English language maps of the period, perhaps only rivaled in detail by the contemporary German August Petermann, who published for Stieler. Keith Johnston's name appears in the title area and the publishing details are in the bottom center margin. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as shown in the main pic. Overall, a beautiful rare map with nice color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches(32x42cm) on a 14 1/2 by 18" 37x46cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. These maps are made by Glencoe and are double sided with one side showing a physical/political world map and the other a colorful political map. 1847 "Stein" (Koehler) World Atlas 27 Folio Maps, Superb Engraving Work, Scarce!
Neuer Atlas der Ganzen Erde Elephant Folio(44 x 28 cm) J.C. Hinrischs'sche, Leipzig, 1847, 27 copperplate engraved maps, original hand colour We are pleased to offer this scarce and lavishly produced 19th century German atlas(Espenhorst PPII 31.1.1.2) compiled under the direction of the Dresden based military cartographer and"Ingeniuer-Oberlieutenant" A. Hugo Koehler. Most of the maps are by Koehler. But maps originally compiled by the renowned cartographer Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Streit(1772-1839) are also present with updates. The atlas was published by the Hinrichs book publishing firm under the imprimatur of the distinguished name of the German cartographer Dr. Christian Gottfried Daniel Stein(1771-1830) as it had its genesis as an accompaniment to Stein's influential Handbuch der Geographie. Juergen Espenhorst in his ... moremagisterial study of 19th century German atlas production Petermann's Planet notes that Stein never contributed any cartography whatsoever to any edition of the atlas yet"Stein" atlases such as this example were marketed decades after his death were. Despite entirely new cartography. Stein never had anything to do with a single map, yet his Handbuch went through seven editions from 1808 to 1872 so the marketing strategy was probably intended to feed off the success of that work and to have a"name" like Stieler associated with the subsequent editions of the atlas. Discerning collectors will instantly recognise the scarcity of this atlas- extant copies are estimated in the single digits. The maps in this atlas are elegant copperplate engravings with delicate original hand colour. And most are masterfully engraved by the Leipzig artist and engraver Heinrich Leutemann Sr. whose Heinrich Leutemann Jr. enjoyed considerable fame as an artist in the second half of the 19th century. 1911 Rand McNally World Atlas State & County Survey Ohio Color Maps & Fold Outs
Here is a very nice. Early 20th Century World Atlas produced and compiled by the Rand McNally Company. Chicago and New York. The atlas is dated 1911. It is entitled. Rand McNally& Company's New Ideal State and County Survey and Atlas" This is the Ohio Edition. I believe McNally produced this. Or a similar atlas, during this time period featuring the various states per each atlas(I don't know if all the states had their own edition) Still, 99% of the contents of the atlas- maps. General information, charts, and other items common to atlases of this time- are oriented to the USA as a whole. Primarily. And the entire world. Secondarily. In this regard. It is more of an atlas of the United States. With some extras maps and information pertaining to Ohio- it is not an atlas of Ohio, per se. The maps are superb. As one would expect, ... moreand demand, from a cartographer as skilled and reknown as Rand McNally during this time period. The maps are in full color. There are also several folio. Fold-out maps in the book. These maps are printed on very thin. Like onion skin. Folio, or tracing, paper- yet, they are in very good condition and still bound to the spine of the book. On the Ohio folio map, there is a clean tear of about 5" but the map is otherwise in very good or better shape. At the end of the book there is a non-attached. take-out" map of Cleveland. Ohio showing the Lake Erie shoreline and railroad lines. This map is huge- 37" x 47" This map has some roughness on the edges and some rips at the intersections of the folds. But it is a beautiful, B& W line drawing unto itself, and its problems could be corrected with framing. It was never attached, so if this book wasn't well preserved, this map would have been long gone decades ago. There is alos a gorgeous, 4 panel fold-out folio map of distances and time zones of the world with printing on the back of the folio sheet that is really something(see photo 9, which doesn't do it justice) The book contains 122 pages. A group of biographical essays of princes and leaders Botero admired follows in I Capiani while the two concluding works on Spain and the Republic of Venice expand on Botero's political outlook that was in explicit opposition to the views of Machiavelli. Botero believed in a ... moreconservative outlook of governance and Catholic monarchies( il conservare) as opposed to reckless conquest( l'aggrandire) and argued that empires could remain strong despite separation by oceans and lands. He also placed special emphasis on the need for European unity in facing the threat from the Ottoman Empire which he saw as an existential menace to European civilisation. Written during the last decade of the 16th century and the first decade of the 17th. The white cover Guide from 1964/5 is in good condition, no foreign markings or undue wear. The"all-new" book for 1965 is also quite good, and there are 2 maps- Shell oil and Sinclair has their dinosaur in two places, plus a small promotion of the Sinclair Dinoland. Hong Kong Pavilion Official Bulletin. New York World's Fair 1964-1965 A rare find in very good condition! Cover has a dragon emblem embroidery on a red satin background. Softcover. 8 inches x 5 3/4 inches, 100 pages. Includes 2 page art by Don Kingman(1911-2000) map of pavilion; a map of Hong Kong and territories, street maps. Most of the book is about Hong Kong with many color and black and white photos, and ads, including Mak's plastic toys, many restaurants, clothing, etc. The inside front cover has Chinese writing on the right page and the Winchester ad on the left page-the ad is upside down. I don't know if they were all published this way or if this is a mistake. And thus, even rarer. I looked at it with a mgnifier and I can't be sure, but it looks like cover and an inside cover page glued together, since the embroidery ... morehad to be attached to the cover. NOTE: I showed it rightside up in the photo-should have flipped it) Condition: Cover is intact. Spine tight. There is some print transfer. There is some rippling around the piece of embroidery, which was glued between two cover pieces-it is intact except for one small area(about 3/8 inch) There is a little soiling on the red satin-not as dark or noticeable as it looks in the photo. The pages are clean and unmarked. Minimal imperfections: inside front and back cover have some light spots. The closed pages edges may have light soiling that extends a tiny fraction onto the page edge of about 3-4 pages. I accept returns within 14 days; buyer pays return shipping. 1904 North & South Carolina Hammond Atlas of the World 2-Sided Colorful Maps
Up for auction are two of several 19104 C.S. Hammond Atlas of the World maps I have on eBay. There is a map on each side. So you can put them in a two-sided frame to get twice the pleasure from them. Each page from the Atlas measures about 10 x 13 1/4" The maps are very colorful, totally readable. And ion state maps, include identification of cities and towns, with their populations and locations on the map. Some maps also show the state's total population as of 1900, a breakdown of the state's population by race and gender, number of foreign-born and native-born, and land and water surfaces in square miles. Latitude and longitude numbers are shown on all four sides of state maps, but not on city maps. All the maps are generally in very good condition, all complete, no serious flaws.
