1879 Two Double-Page Maps -"North & N.E Divisions of Yorkshire"-Pictorial World
Two large double-page antique maps entitled"The Pictorial World Map of Yorkshire" North-West Division and North-East Division. These maps were originally issued singly as Supplements to the Pictorial World newspaper which published from 1874 to 1892 and eventually became The Sphere magazine. These maps were published and dated March 29. 1879 and August 23, 1879 and include on the reverse information on the North Division including populations of all the principal towns(see scans) Printed color. From the landing of 22 Jan 1944(Operation Shingle" up to the"Breakthrough" of May-June 1944. Original front wrap with black titles. Containing 25 full page colour maps(each page measuring 27 x 26cm) with a centrefold forming a booklet sized: 14 x 26cm. No publication information is given. And I am basing on the British Library copy(the only one listed on Copac) ABOUT THE BATTLE OF ANZIO: Operation Shingle(January 22. 1944) was an Allied amphibious landing in the Italian Campaign against German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno, Italy. The operation was commanded by American Major General John P. Lucas and was intended to outflank German ... moreforces of the Winter Line and enable an attack on Rome. The resulting combat is commonly called the Battle of Anzio. The success of an amphibious landing at that location. In a basin consisting substantially of reclaimed marshland and surrounded by mountains, depended completely on the element of surprise and the swiftness with which the invaders could move relative to the reaction time of the defenders. Any delay could result in the occupation of the mountains by the defenders and the consequent entrapment of the invaders. This listing is for a wonderful book showing color pictures of 34 famous world maps. It was published in 1960 by Sterling Publishing of NY NY. Maps featured in the book range from the 1500's to the 1800's. Nearly 500 years of maps represented in these 34 prints. World wide locations. How did the world look to those early explorers? The book is 14" wide by 12" tall and 1 1/2" think. It is a hardback book. The front and back covers have some age and spotting as seen in our first and last picture. However. The inside is clean and without any markings, no folds, no tears and no loose pages. We took pictures of three random maps as seen in our middle pictures. Each map has very bright colors. Offered for sale is this antique 1916 Rand McNally International Atlas in very poor condition. The covers have separated and the binding is loose. There are loose pages with worn page edges and some tears. There are probably some missing pages as I noticed the Italy Map was cut out and missing. But still at lot of maps left. It is a large sized Atlas and measures about 14 1/2" by 11 1/2" This would be a GREAT atlas to remove the colored maps from for framing! The book is basically coming apart anyways and it would be great to save these maps and illustrations. Most of the shipwreck maps are for the New England coast but several are for Florida. The Caribbean, Cuba etc. There are 5 shipwreck maps for the Great Lakes and one map of the British Isles. The atlas pinpoints and describes hundreds of treasure spots. For example, the double page color map for Lake Superior shows the locations of 65 shipwrecks and describes them. Beautiful Hand Colored 1887 Catholic Atlas This lovely book is a collectible you would be proud to have in your library. It is"Atlas Pour Servir a L'Enseignement et a L'etude de L'historie Universelle de L'Eglise Catholique" by A. H. Dufour. My 8th grade French is a bit rusty. But this appears to be a wonderful atlas concerning the history of the Catholic Church. It is written in French, and contains 24 double page maps that are hand colored. Most maps are large, a few pages contain smaller maps. Each page measures over 11.5" by 17" The date is 1887. The maps in this Atlas are quite fascinating. Not only do they show different countries and continents. They also show history. One map depicts how Europe looked in 771, one shows the paths of the crusades, another shows the route of Kublai Khan. There's ... morethe Babylonian empire and empire of Cyrus, and some that I don't understand(distribution of children? The maps towards the end of the book at straight forward maps of Africa and the Americas. This book is in good condition for its age. The pages are a yellowed parchment color. They came out more white on my camera for some reason. The paper is not white. The maps are all complete with no water damage or rips, but there are some age spots and places where the hand coloring of the borders and rivers has seeped through to the back of the page a little. The spine is loose and split along the top of the front cover. The corners of the covers are worn. The first few pages have some chips out of the paper at the top, but it doesn't come anywhere near the map outline. These unique maps are suitable for framing. This book is sold in aged, as-is condition! I have described this to the best of my ability but please feel free to ask questions, I am not an expert on books. I have. For your consideration, a very rare set of early maps. I believe these may be by one of Americas first map makers, Mathew Carey of Philadelphia. They were made in Philadelphia in 1799. These are original, hand colored copper engravings-they almost look like original drawings. These original maps are quite rare and. To find a set of them is highly unusual! The two double maps measure approx. 22&1/2" by 12" while the world map measures about 17" by 12" Condition is as pictured-a lot of foxing stains throughout and the glass is missing from the Americas maps. Its amazing to think that these were valuable antiques when they were framed and that they were framed 100 years ago! The book was preprinted with spaces to paste in the cards as they were collected. All of the spaces are filled. The text is in German. There are also maps. Some in color. The picture cards are primarily in color, and most are photo reproductions, often from battle fields. The album is in very good condition. With some scuffing and edge wear to the card covers. The corner tips are a little flared and there are a few tiny edge tears. The Century Atlas Of The World - 1899 Edition 118 Double Page Color Maps Antique
You're bidding on"The Century Atlas Of The World" Prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith, A.M. published 1899 by The Century Co. New York. It has 118 double-page color maps covering the world including all of the States of the U.S. and the various countries of the world, many of which are shown in sections over several maps to allow for great detail, including railroad and transit lines, and city insets. Several variations of world maps, and a 20-page introductory section of historical and astronomical maps. The book is large- 10" X 13" and 403 pages- about half of which is index, to give you an idea of the detail of this work. The Century Company was the publisher of The Century Magazine, which was renowned in its time for high quality- this Atlas is no exception, a beautiful example of late-Victorian ... morepublishing. The pages on the back sides of the maps are blank, rare for the period, or now for that matter, so there is no bleedthrough. Decorative endpapers and leatherbound boards with elegant gilt labeling on the spine and leather corner tips. Interestingly, the Preface indicates that this edition has been updated to provide greater detail of Hawaii due to annexation and of areas"recently" affected by the war with Spain. Book is in good overall condition with some specific issues. Partial hinge-cracking(about two thirds down rom top through the center- see photos) inside the front cover with partial detachment of the first couple of endpapers- a common condition for books large. Heavy books- but cover still attached. No hinge-cracking at rear, and no textblock splits within. Some fray and wear of the leather at the corner tips and edges, including the beginnings of split at the top and bottom front and back edges of the spine. Some wear and spotting of the boards, including a large stain on the back. Overall, functionally solid and should remain so if handled with care- still retains nice"old book" appeal externally. This is a huge lot of vintage National Geographic Maps. Dates as early as 1947 They all appear to be in good shape. I didn't open each one to check for tears or damage so this auction is"as is" There is some discoloration due to age on the oldest ones and some typical minor bends.
