Up for auction is a rare U.S. Senate printed document. From the 30th Congress, 2d Session, dated February 8, 1849, a LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY. Submitting A Report in Reply to a Resolution of the Senate of December 27, 1848, Relating to the Expenditures and Results of the United States Coast Survey. A comprehensive 111-page document. Removed from a larger bound volume of government documents long ago(not by me. Today called the Coast and Geodetic Survey, the Coast Survey was begun in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson and is the U.S. governments oldest scientific organization. Louis Agassiz, James Whistler, and John Muir were all, at one time, employed by the Survey, which has as its mission the intricate mapping of the coastal terrain of the nation, so as to assure the safe passage of shipping and naval vessels. This lengthy document ... moredetails all the expenses and activities of the Survey. Portrayed in a variety of fascinating charts, listing all of the topographical maps(pp. 42-61) all of the hydrographic charts(pp. 62-76) the various instruments(zeniths, micrometers, thermometers, etc. owned by the Survey(pp. 96-102) and much, much more. A dizzying array of information about the Survey, prepared for the U.S. Senate. The first 5 we are describing were put out by SKELLY OIL COMPANY. The states are N. DAKOTA-S. DAKOTA. 2-MINNESOTA, WYOMING and COLORADO. These last 2 have graphics of a late 1940's automobile on the front. The next 4 maps were put out by MOBIL. They have their logo's with the flying red pegasus horse. The states are for NORTH DAKOTA SOUTH DAKOTA, MINNESOTA, CALIFORNIA and IDAHO MONTANA WYOMING. Two of the maps have graphics of a late 50's or very early 1960's automobile on the front. The next is for the WESTERN STATES and was put out by UTOCO(UTAH OIL REFINING COMPANY) It has graphics of a late 1940's automobile on the front. The next 9 maps were put out by TEXACO.
