Up for auction is a recent estate find: a majestic early 20th century black walnut baluster from the bottom of a steep stairway. Standing a full 48" tall. At the top at its widest it measures 8 1/2" square, while the column is 6 1/4" square. You can see in the photos where the banister detached from this heirloom, and the unfinished base bottom shows the outlay of walnut boards. Sand and refinish-this would make a spectacular addition to someone's home! Alternatively, this would also make an outstanding, stunning plant stand. Pair of 19thc, Wood Carvings of Warriors. Newel posts or furniture figurines?
This pair of oak warriors stand over a foot high. On modern brackets. They are oak and have a 19thc patina. And that's where I would estimate them to be. Definitely a pair. Having left and right shields and opposite sword hands, but there are other differences. One is chubbier than the other, which suggests a story. Took the first photos under a ceiling light. And the others with a flash, and darker background. Hope it shows how good they are. Slight wear and tear commensurate with age. And they've on modern brackets for display, one screw on each. A small recess on the back of both gives easy hanging. But are probably from when they were attached to their original host.

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Set of 2- Antique Newel Post Finials with fittings circa 1840- 1870. I believe the fittings are for a curtin rod. MAKER: Boston& Sandwich PATTERN: Hobnail Finial with fitting COLOR: French Blue Opaline MEASUREMENTS: 7 1/2" tall with fitting. 5" tall glass finial, approximately 3" diameter at widest point. The fitting is 1" across and opening diameter of 1/2" CONDITION: Very Good Used Condition. One has a couple of small chips and a couple of bites on the top. I think you can see them in the photos. and the other has a scratch and a couple of very tiny bites on the top. I believe you can also see this in the photos. There are NO other Chips. This is rare find. Large cast iron newel posts from the late 1800's. These posts are from the Sterling Hotel of Wilkes barre Pennsylvania. This hotel was frequented by Coal barons and other prosperous merchants of the time. It was even visited in the early 1900's by Eleanore Roosevelt. The lobby was stunning. Oak Newel Posts (5) Architectual Salvage
For sale is a group of five(5) red oak newel post that include the one pictured and four(4) identical pieces. They are 35" long plus about 1" for the round tenon. The square base is 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" Tapered fluted body. These were turned from laminated stock(3 pieces) and grain matches very well and they appear to be one solid piece. They have are natural color and have a clear lacquer or varnish finish. Can be used in some stairwork applications. Room dividers or be repurposed for table or chair legs, lamp, pepper mill or other lathe project. The actual weight is a bit over six(6) pounds each. Description This is a nice newel post that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. It is made of oak and was painted but has been stripped. The top of the post has carved flowers on three sides with nice Victorian details below. The shaft has Eastlake Spoon Carvings on three sides. There is a flower pot with vines and flowers. There is a cut out for the step at the bottom but is freestanding. The total measurements are 46.25 inches tall by 7.75 inches square at the base and 6 inches square at the shaft. Overall it is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning. It needs a final finish sanding and it needs a finial. selling as is. Looks to be in good condition. The wooden pegs at the bottom of the peace have 3 missing. THe item is made out of some brass the rest I don't know. I think its mostly brass. The light is wired for a light bulb and to be put on a switch however only one wire is hanging out the end. It was in working order when it was removed. Im selling the base. The top of the shaft has carved panels on three sides. Below are three recessed panels that are on all 4 sides. There are Eastlake beveled corners with applied beadwork. It is notched for the step but freestanding. It weighs about 60 pounds. It measures 61 inches tall and is 8 inches square at the shaft and 9 square a the base. Overall. It is in good condition. This is a pair of Victorian Finials I'm not sure of the wood There are deep grooves where the items would have attached to the piece of furniture. Maybe a bed, stair tops or sideboard. Big French Green Opaline Glass Newel Post Finial
A lovely old French Opaline Glass Newel Post Finial. The Finial is made from a pale green opaline glass and the fittings are brass. When the light passes through the glass it is translucent and has an attractive paneled design because of the ribs. The Finial is BIG at 7 1/2" high x 3 1/4" in diameter. It has a threaded hole on the bottom which is approximately 5/16" in diameter. It is in very good overall condition with no chips or cracks in the glass. The only thing to note is a small gap on the bottom of the glass where it meets the brass, it is very secure so it is probably in the making. The brass has 2 dents where someone used a tool to remove it from it's newel post, see photos. The finial looks great as a decorative accessory and would be perfect in a Victorian decor. Rare pair of matching late 1800s walnut newel posts
This is a very rare find 2 matching late 1800 newel posts made of what I believe is walnut.They came from 2 homes next to each other in Newyork being totally renovated.I also will list the handrails and spindles from the same home but the handrails appear to be matching walnut to these large newel posts and the spindles seem to be oak.They are around 54 inches tall and 9 and 9-3/4 inches wide and are complete with only a few small pieces of molding missing as pictures show.There are no cutouts for steps and only the screw to attach the handrails as far as weight my guess is 50-60lbs.This is a super nice item to install on opposite sides of a stairway or entrance.As stated I believe the wood is walnut with very nice color and grain where the paint is off in spots restore this back to the original look and they will be amazing in any ones home.For ... moreany other info email or contact Vinny 1-631-300-7403 thanks.

Nicely Proportioned Walnut Newel Finial I used to keep this handsome finial sitting on a shelf as if it were a piece of wooden sculpture. But you might have an actual post it could sit on. I’ve described it as being made of walnut, but it could be something else. The photos show it as having a bit of an orangey tone, but in real life it is more of a muted raw umber. The body is turned out of three laminated pieces. The pinnacle and base have been turned separately. The height is 6” the body 5” in diameter, and the base 2-7/8” in diameter.

It measures 22" tall and about 18" and the widest part across. the frame is about 3.5" wide at the largest point. This is for a swivel mirror. Antique Tiger oak wood Balusters hand rails mortise newel posts large pieces old
I have some very nice pieces that I took out of one of my houses before it was demolished. I took all the parts for a staircase. Everything that you need except the steps. There are 2 Newel posts, the housed and open stringer(very thick) all the shaped, not square ballusters and all the handrails, even the trim that goes in between the ballusters. These all have white paint over them. But can easily be restored. I have restored many of my own items, and I know how beautiful these stairs will look. They would cost a fortune to find a solid piece of oak this large! I also have tons of door and window trim, and doors too. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more pictures and measurements. The pictures of the refinished stairs are not the items that I have. But look similar if they were restored. New INFO: Large Newel Post ... moreis 56.25" tall and 6" wide at base and 7.5" wide at top. The top has leaves carved into the oak. Look closely through the paint. Lots of detail and is in great shape. Smaller Newel Post is 38" tall and 4.75" wide. And is more of a basic design(came from the same staircase though) There are 22 angle shaped balusters spindles(for the stairs) 25" x 1 5/8. 22 flat end balusters spindles(for the top of stairs down the hallway) 26" x 1.75" Hand Rail is 136" long and is 2.5"x 5" Smaller Hand Rail is 8' long with 2 end pieces that are 6.25" long. Closed Skirt Stringer 99.5 x 8.25 x 7/8. Open Stringer 143" x 11.25 x 1. I also have a bad full of the trim pieces that go between the balusters. And some other trim pieces that came off of the stairs.

FINELY CARVED NEWEL POST NEWEL POST. 20" high. 6 1/2" wide(maximum) 6" deep(maximum) the dominant feature a griffin's head, mouth agape, six teeth threatening, the swept-back whiskers and hair(the latter upraised as well) suggesting the wings whose presence we are denied, an interlocking cartouche carved into the beast's baluster-shaped chest, a cylindrically-shaped, turned dome on either side medially, as stumps of wings. The base measures 4 7/8" by 2" the top 4 7/8" square; the four pieces of wood at the top's perimeter, joined at 45-degree angles at their corners, constitute a later addition(one of these is loose and requires a second nail) The piece is not quite free-standing(it falls forward) and bears a slotted hook on its backside to secure it upright. The composition is in three layers; three ... moresections of wood are visible when the top of the post is viewed. And further, hairline separations are visible along the length of either side. The base strip is 7/8" thick, the center 2" thick, the top(which bears most of the carving) varying in depth. The wood grain at the juncture of the top and center sections is very nearly continuous along most of the length, while that between the center section and the backing section is obviously different. The wood throughout is apparently the same species, perhaps oak. Given the short height. This is in all probability part of a larger(taller) composition. The carving throughout is fine, and in fine state.
