SUPERB PAIR ANTIQUE FRENCH CHATEAU WALNUT STAIR FINIALS BOULE D`ESCALIER c1880 Please scroll down for more pictures. This is a beautiful pair of antique French walnut Boule D`escalier stair finials that date from the 1880s. Both are solid walnut and have superb detailing and would have been on a very decadent and grand staircase. They could also be used as armoire or bed finials and do look stunning simply placed on a shelf or mantlepiece! The acorn tops have deep tactile carving and at the base of each finial on the square stand is a brass band border that has taken on a dark deep old gold with the passage of time. It would be possible to polish them if required. Each base has a fluted shape with a hole in the bottom for fixing. The brass bands are slightly larger than the wood now. Probably with age so they can be moved, it would be possible ... moreto work with them but it really does not detract and are not in a place where they are gripped. The finial could be removed from the base if required but that seems a little drastic as the rings moving does not detract in any way! Looking at one finial it looks as if there was once a wooden lip that sat above them to keep them solid. Dating from the late 1800s this wonderful antique French boule d`escalier staircase finial is fabulous quality. It is solid and heavyweight crystal and has the most amazing period look. The solid glass" boule" is faceted to catch the light and it has delicieux tiny bubbles within as it should at this age.
