French Louis XV Style Antique Settee Sofa Canape, Carved, Gilded & Painted
French Louis XV Style Carved and Painted Antique Settee Early 20th Century Item# 130008SIU26 A very attractive antique settee of the French Louis XV taste. This is a lovely piece that exhibits all typical elements of the Rococo movement, but clearly with an angularity that speaks of influence from the Art Deco movement. The frame of the antique French settee is painted in a tarnished silver, this delightfully worn away in well used areas, resulting in a nice growing patina throughout. Resting over the trapezoidal seat back. The crest is carved of the solid with several roses that flow outward into the molded frame with foliage, flanked only by pyramid finials draped in acanthus leafage at each corner. These vary in detail, some parts of the finials being of incredible depth and multiple layers of acanthus, while others are somewhat blurry- ... morethis is likely accounted for by overpainting at one point, where too much paint was used and resulted in a"blurring" of what is likely very fine detail beneath the paint. The arms bend out around the round seat in a highly circular movement, the handholds carved with scaled embellishments along the grip and down the arm support, the paint on these somewhat worn away to reveal the(presumably) beech frame beneath. The legs have robust acanthus leafage flowing from the knee along the frame as they join the seat. Each foot terminating in scrolled toes in the Louis XV manner. For anyone passionate about the Louis XV style in antique seating furniture. This is a simply lovely antique settee to be actively enjoyed. The upholstery should be replaced in our opinion, though it does seem relatively free of stains. Here we have for offer a good Victorian mahogany Chesterfield style mahogany three seater settee dating to the second half of the 19th century. This good sized sofa has a well padded back with scrolled arms over a sprung seat being raised on mahogany turned legs with later castors. Condition wise the back and arms are fine being well stuffed and padded. The seat is comfortable but little soft in places although the springs have not gone and just need a little tightening and padding. As you can see the castors are much later but we have included in the sale a set of two brass castors which we will put on prior to delivery(shown in the pictures) The brown velour upholstery whilst not ripped is quite dusty and if was going to be kept could do with a good brush/ wash. French Louis XVI Style Upholstered Canape 20th Century w/ a worn gilded gesso surface Item# 130009HAP22 This is a very cute French Louis XVI Style settee in an old yellow upholstery. The frame is heavily carved solid walnut beneath a light layer of gesso and is covered in an oxidized and worn gilding. Carved in the typical Louis XVI manner. The frame is molded with rope carvings around the entirety of it and is crested by a twisted ribbon wreath. Resting over tapered and fluted legs and terminating in balled stumps, the settee remains incredibly sturdy and strong; it is very comfortable and supportive for lounging and relaxing, despite having been designed primarily as a stunning decorative work. Antique Settee or Loveseat- my research indicates that this is probably Sheraton/Sheraton style. Hepplewhite/Hepplewhite style, or American Federal Style. I lean toward Sheraton because the style matches that most closely, and the wood does not look like Mahogany and Sheraton furniture was frequently done in Satinwood. We are selling a Victorian Settee- I'm not sure how old it is exactly but I'd guess that it's from the mid to late 1800's. I purchased it from an antique store a few years ago and they didn't have any information about it. It's a pretty teal color- the back is the same as the front(the flash from the camera makes it look a little lighter but it's not) It is nicely carved and the upholstery is in very good condition- no stains or rips. I am not sure if the upholstery is original or not. The sofa measures approximately 64" long. 25" wide and the seat sits at 16. As with any piece of older furniture there are some nicks and dings in the wood but it is a beautiful sofa. Local pick up only within 10 calendar days of winning bid.
