The sofa still retains its original horse hair stuffing which is covered in a navy blue material. As you can tell the sofa is missing some veneer and ornamental applique pieces. The wood is literally riddled by several reupholsterings with tacks and nails and often requires serious repairs to the wood before it can be upholstered again. It was entirely hand made with the highest levels of craf tsmanship- no cut corners. Hand sawn. Hand planed. In other words, pieces like this are usually worn out and are done over so many times that they're no longer usable. Not this piece. It's one of the best p reser ved p ieces I've ever had in my shop- Golden Eagle Cabinet Shop. Negatives- at 170 years of age. One will want to av oid hard use. The re upholstery could use an application of gimp along the crest rail borders- a normal finishing touch not done yet. The original coil springs have diff erent spring so unds for di fferent places one might sit. And as befit s a dowager of mature age. There is a bit of lumpiness. V isually stunning with depth and vibrant color. This piece will proudl y be the centerpiece in your h ome. Federal Style Antique Mahogany Window Bench Sofa Settee Canape Loveseat
Federal Style Mahogany Camel Back Upholstered Settee Circa the First Quarter of the 20th Century With a soft serpentine curvature along the crest into the arms. This petite window bench has wonderful form. The arms scroll outward and into the seat frame, the entire frame covered in a striped upholstery, which stuffs over the frame of the seat. The sofa rests over two tapered and molded front legs, each of solid carved mahogany- the back legs are slightly backswept, tapering in a plain leg. This is a gorgeous designer piece. Dimensionally perfect for a window bench, a small settee in front of the master bed, as a seating implement in a smaller room or study. It is incredibly comfortable, very strong and sturdy throughout and absolutely charming in every way. The hand carved legs have a beautiful soft patina in the deep finish. A straight-arm antique style settee crafted after the original works of New England. The frame has a wonderful square profile. The tight lines given ease in the well carved reeded arms and legs. The mellow pink striped upholstery is in excellent condition, bringing a warm airiness to the overall design. The crest has a soft serpentine along the entire length.
