Crafted entirely by hand during the first half of the 20th Century- the joinery is period in craftsmanship, utilizing pinned tenon mortise joints to secure much of the frame; the finest form of joinery, not only because it creates a natural strength that will last hundreds of years, but also because the pegs themselves add a character and beauty to the form. The surfaces are painted with a distressed off-white paint, several layers worn and rubbed to give it a faux patina throughout the surfaces. Carefully carved by hand. this is a beautiful parlor set from England. The sofa is 8' long and 42 1/2" high at the highest point on the back. It has beautiful wood carved trim around the entire sofa and chairs. It looks like maybe a dogwood or magnolia flower pattern. the upholstery is a satiny brocade or embossed type of material. The set includes the sofa. Gentleman's chair, ladies chair and marble top round table(31" across) all good condition. It is a really nice set and the wood carving is really nice. It is not a new replica but manufactired in the 40's in England. the material is a light beige to a light pinkish on the satiny part of the material depending on the light reflection. very nice. There are three tags(see photos of tags) on the bottom of sofa which read"John M. Smyth, Chicago 9823, Made by Vander Ley Brothers, Inc. Division of John Widdicomb Co. Grand Rapids, MI, and"Wm. A Berkey, Division of John Widdicomb. The sofa has a hardwood frame with fine graining, not sure of wood type. The stain is a warm, rich brown-very similar to photos. The finish is a semi-gloss finish which has some minimal chipping on a few legs, see picture in listing for example. The upper part of frame has a few similar chips, very minimal and not easily discerned. The green sofa upholstery looks like new-no spots, stains or fabric thinning. This sofa has been shrinked wrapped ... morein plastic for the last 12 years and stored in our finished basement. Prior to being in our home, it was in my mother-in-law's living room for many years and was rarely used. I believe the two cushions on sofa are feather filled, no zipper on cushions. The fabric is green textured with a gold threading running through it. Decorative 3/8" antique brass shaded beading/tacking runs around fabric/frame of sofa. The black fabric on bottom of sofa is pulling away and breaking through on a couple sofa corners(see photo with tag 9823) and tearing slightly in a few other places. This fabric is somewhat thin and fragile. Sofa frame is in excellent condition and very heavy weight. The following are the approximate sofa measurements: 81" wide, 29.5" deep, 31.5" back height, 25.5" average arm height. The sofa is being sold for local pick-up only from my home and will require two persons to move. Will not ship. PRICE REDUCED! THIS IS A $4500.00 ANTIQUE SOFA! This LARGE Victorian sofa is ALL ORIGINAL and dates back to the late 1800's(or VERY early 1900's) It is VERY UNUSUAL and a TRUE WORK OF ART. I highly doubt you will find anything like it as our family has collected French and Victorian antiques for as long as I can remember and I haven't seen anything close to it. This very special piece originally came from a French Estate in Europe. It is NOT a reproduction- this is the REAL THING. The workmanship and attention to detail is incredible. I cannot say the sofa is in Mint condition. But it is in EXCELLENT condition considering it is over ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. The wood is a deep walnut tone and ORNATELY carved with beautiful details on each hump and center crest. There are also carved roses in the leg portions and carving at the bottom ... moreof the seat. The legs are curved in true French Victorian style and are attached to tiny wheels. The wood is in perfect condition with no missing or repaired pieces. The upholstery is AUTHENTIC and ORIGINAL to the piece. The pattern and color is a SAGE GREEN(Celery Green) DAMASK. The back portion of the piece is PHENOMENAL- it is completely TUFTED with BUTTON CENTERS giving the piece a most ELEGANT look. The springs in the seat cushion are still tight and hold weight well. This piece was displayed in our sitting room in Florida for years and only used as an accent piece. The only flaw that stands out is some faint damage- ONLY ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE UPHOLSTERY. It appears that rust like colored stains have emerged(on the back of the left hump area toward the ground above the gimp trim) But it doesn't really show when displayed face forward. IT MAY CLEAN UP WITH UPHOLSTERY CLEANER but it probably would be best reupholstered. There is also a slight puncture in the upper portion of the back. But once again, as evidenced by my photos, you don't notice this area if placed against a wall. This is the condition in which we purchased the piece. It may come up with upholstery

French Provincial Antique Settee[Loveseat. Sofa] 18th Century Item# 120001GJB01 This listing is for a French Provincial Carved Fruitwood Antique Settee. Probably crafted during the late 18th(possibly early 19th) Century. It is a rather interesting piece, boasting a steeply serpentine frame, curving around the upholstered back with offshoots of acanthus carvings throughout, culminating at the top center in a carved foliate motif. Long rounded arms slope from the back, curling into deep hand rests over cabriole arm supports. A flat upholstered seat rests over a wavy apron with foliate carvings that mirror the crest, flanked by cabriole legs terminating in french toes wrapped in acanthus leaves. The joints are locked in place with exposed peg construction. The back of the sofa is exposed, held in place with iron braces that secure the back firmly ... morein place. This is a cute settee with good strength throughout. Despite it's age and delicate nature, making it an antique you can live with and enjoy comfortably. With a warm patina throughout in deeply polished surfaces and a highly oxidized finish, this antique french settee would work well in the formal living room just as easily as a large bedroom between a pair of windows or at the end of the bed. For Sale is a possibly 1850's sofa(an Antique dealer mentioned the possible year after investigating its past) I had it professionally reupolstered in a beautiful neutral fabric with a scroll design. Measures 84x33. Very comfortable and accommodates nicely I am not sure of the origin. I just know what I love and when I saw it I had to have it. The many carvings and details in the wood make it unique. One of the carvings looks like a"genie bottle" Professionally reupholstered by the same person who has done all of my work for the past 20+ years. Heres a vintage sofa in the Hollywood Regency or Country French style. Not too sure which style to call it. This came from the original owners Estate where its been covered in plastic since new. The plastic is tattered a bit and kinda dingy on the outside and I wouldnt keep it. But for now its doing an excellent job in protecting the fabric. Carved wood frame with a pale yellow velvet fabric. Ive had the plastic off and the fabric is in outstanding shape. In fact its like new. There is a small amount of dust and debris that will simply have to be vacuumed off but this will look great once set up and plastic off. Country French Carved 1950 Vintage Sofa. Down Cushions. The graceful hand carved fruitwood frame of this 1950's Country French sofa has a very fine finish. Waxed and polished. Only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its luster. The original soft velvet upholstery is in very good condition with some wear and a few mars as shown in photos. Soft seat cushions are stuffed with genuine goose down on this vintage furniture from France. Size is 6' 1" long. 32" deep, 34" tall and the seat is 17" high.
