Grab the sofa at the top of the end wings and place your other hand on the center of the sofa seat. Try to wiggle the piece. You can't. Its solid. I have been told that this is because the leg piece that goes down the sides from the arms to the legs is a single solid piece of wood. Many sofas you may see have a split at the middle between the arm and the leg. This joint is what weakens and causes the piece to become wobbly and unstable. I have not had this piece'officially' appraised. But I have had knowledgeable antiques cognoscenti[long time dealers and auctioneers] tell me that the side legs being all one piece indicates an age of the piece being approximately the 1890-1910 era. I am not an expert on Antique furniture however based on my research and info from the previous owner this is a Chippendale Mahogany 100% SILK Camel back sofa with down seat cushion. It has no visible tears that I can easily see. All 4 clips to attach seat cushion are in excellent condition. The zipper for the cushion cover is in excellent condition. Needs to be cleaned and the Mahogany legs do show some vintage wear but could easily be refinished. The colors are vibrant and I don't know if this is the original fabric or if it is a re-cover. I believe this sofa to be from 1923. It was out of my grandmothers original estate in Atlanta. When I was little I recall two identical sofas at either end of the room that were moved on special occasions for ballroom dancing. I don't know what family member ended up with its mate. I brought it to New Jersey& had it re upholstered a few years ago. It was done with very heavy high end velvet stripe. 80x 32. It is solid. Very heavy. The cushions are down filled but could use some fluffing. The seat is a single cushion This is a stunning piece and I will miss it greatly, but, has to find a new home. Check out the woodwork. Condition: very good Appraised By: Jeffrey Motsinger Appraiser Comments: It is a great old lounge chair. It features traditional forms such as the camel back and the shaped legs but hints at Art Deco with the broadly rolled arms and vertical piping. It probably dates to around 1925-1935 and is American-made. The chair's value depends a lot on the exact condition of the fabric and upholstering. It seems, in the photograph, that there is a stain on the seat and loose edges at the front. Odd that it doesn't have any vertical wood trim at the front of the arms. This is a great piece. a Victorian antique setee/ parlor sofa with a cameo type camel back. The piece has carved details. This is a truly beautiful piece. Sturdy and in very good condition especially for the age. The only damage I could see is a small nick in the top edge of the wood at the back of the sofa- not noticeable unless you're looking for it(see photo) Amazingly, the upholstery is worn but intact; braid trim is also intact. The latest and inexpensive trend in completely transforming upholstered goods and re-purposing furniture. Using only the finest materials, the frame is solid oak and the seat cushion is down wrapped and extremely comfortable. The legs feature hand carved ball and claw mahogany. It measures approximately 78 inches in length and 30 inches high at arm level. Please check the photos for a bit of rough fabric on one of the back corners as our cat loved this sofa, too.
