RARE ANTIQUE 1880 DISSECTED SECTIONAL MAP PUZZLE OF THE UNITED STATES!
Here is an extremely rare and wonderful antique 135 year old dissected sectional puzzle map of the United States titled“Sectional Map” and published by Stickle& Mason of Weedsport. N.Y. This scarce map puzzle is of a hand-colored map attributed to George F. Cram. The George F. Cram Company was founded in 1869 and has outlived almost all other 19th century map publishers to remain a major name in the industry today. The puzzle is undated but dates to 1880 as the Cram map used for the puzzle states a U.S. population of 50,152,866 and census data shows a 1879 population of 48.9 million and 1881 population of 51.3 million. This is most likely the only example of this puzzle still in existence! Through extensive research. I cannot find any other examples of this puzzle ever being documented and reference to the Stickle& Mason Publishing ... moreCompany is very limited. This early hand colored jigsaw puzzle comes in its original box. The box cover illustration features a fantastic picture of a young lady and gentleman sitting at a child’s table assembling the puzzle with a large map of the western hemisphere in the background. The box measures 8 inches by 6.5 inches by 3 inches. The original cardboard box is in a nice presentable condition for its age. The box top is missing one short apron and 3/4 ths of one long apron with an old hand-stitched repair in one corner. The original box bottom is in fantastic condition with just two corners displaying hand-stich repairs. The puzzle itself measures 18 inches by 12 inches and is hand cut along the state lines with a total of 56 pieces. The wood used for the puzzle appears to be a thick mahogany(although I am not certain) and measures half a centimeter thick. A few small tabs are missing but do not detract from the beauty of this rare puzzle. The map features"Indian Territory" now the state of Oklahoma) Dakota as one state(prior to the division of the North and South in 1889) and Lower California which is now the Mexican Yucatan peninsula. In Gently Used Condition with minor flaws expected from the age of this piece! This gorgeous mirror is perfect for the Shabby Chic style! Made of wood with three mirrors separated by decorative wood trim and wood embellishments on top with a groove on the bottom. There is some chippy paint and scuffs. The mirror edges are smooth and form a beautiful feminine shape. The mirrors are secure however the smaller left side mirror could use better adhesion to the wood to prevent future damage. I believe it is called tongue and groove when the wood is ... morejoined securely and built well. Which this frame has. The mirrors have a thick plyboard back covering with solid wood framing firmly attached altogether. The mirror itself has some silvering and aging which only adds to its character and charm!
