1890 Empire Ribbon Mahogany Sofa Antique Vintage
The sofa had been my mother's for about 50 years. But had belonged to a friend and the friend's family, previously. An antique dealer has dated it, from the construction, to 1890. His comments: Your sofa is late Victorian. It's definitely mahogany with a very nice ribbon grain to it. I have restored several very similar. One of the problems inherent with the earlier ones(not this one) was that the legs would break in the area at the top of the leg(in a closeup pic) Toward the late 1880s to 1890s. Which is what yours is, they solved that problem by laminating 3 layers of wood in the legs, grain going different directions(like this one) so as not to split with the grain. The sofa was reupholstered in the 1960s or 70s. It’s exceptionally clean and well taken care of. Nonsmokers. No pets. Both for it's form and quality, it is a distinctive and heavily crafted work. Set over bold marlborough front legs, the centermost and back legs all with a soft saber form, the sofa is kidney shaped with a curved back and serpentine front. The laminated crest rail curves backwards in a distinctly Grecian manner, the whole being exquisitely embellished with original gilt bronze mounts of a Cherub sleeping beneath the clouds with a cornucopia on his lap, another playing a harp in a boat drawn by a sea maiden with butterflies resting on the swirling winds rising from the water, the last figure a putto shown with a branch of laurel leaves beside a memorial plaque and a cape draped from his shoulders. There are a few scuff marks as you can see on the picture, but in my opinion, it's in beautiful condition. I love when things not only are old, but'look old' It's solid wood with a veneer.
