An English Tudor 1920's era sofa or hall table does double duty- flipping the top opens the table to buffet or dining size. The finish is in gorgeous shabby chic primitive condition. Grandly detailed. The strong trestle base of this American made antique furniture is bold and substantial. The patina that you see is what has naturally occurred over the years from being painted different colors. I sanded the table and this is what was found underneath. It is what I like to call"perfectly imperfect. It is a beautiful multi-color with hints of mint green and orange/red. You could still paint or sand and seal the top to your liking. This is a magnificent sofa in very good condition. It is extra large. 70 inches across the back and 66 inches from arm to arm. It is beautifully carved with roses on each of the three crowns. I am not sure if it is French or Victorian and if it is walnut or rose wood. But, I do know I purchased it 25 years ago from an antique furniture dealer that is quite well known in this part of Pennsylvania. I was told it was made in the mid 1800's. It came out of an estate out of upper New York. We had to do a couple of small repairs to the repair and a fix a toe that had some chipping. But overall this sofa is as found. The upholstery must have been done in the last two or three years in a period style upholstery and is in excellent condition. Someone did the right thing and took the extra fabric to make under the arm pillows. The frame itself has been glued, sanded, stained, and applied multiple coats of satin sheen lacquer on it to bring out the flame mahogany, basket urns, carved hairy paw feet and the carved floral fronts of the rolled arms. It even comes with the old country turned back leg, which they usually did in those days as they took things from some old job as the back didn’t count in their rules. You are buying on beautiful ready to go into the home sofa. This one is very comfortable to sit in as they have put in a real thick foam cushion, which is very comfy compared to the old back breakers. This is a wonderful size as it is not over large. The upholstery is a heavy rich creamy ivory/white brocade with a satin finish. The carved wood I believe is rosewood. The seat cushion is one single removable cushion. The couch hasn't been used since it was reupholstered and restored. There is one flaw- a chip to the top of one of the flowers on the top left hand side of the couch. Please see the last photo. FABULOUS ANTIQUE CARVED AND GILDED WOOD LOUIS XVI PARLOR SOFA
Up for auction is a fabulous antique Louis XV carved and gilded parlor sofa. This piece was owned by a woman who lived overseas in France and Italy for many years and this was part of her estate. I purchased it with a pair of gilded Italian wheat sheaf tables which I've since sold. It's a classic piece. Appears the original straw and possibly horse hair stuffing is intact under the upholstery. I believe the original owner reupholstered the piece herself. The back is covered in cotton batting. It is in good. Sturdy condition. The gilding has an aged patina with some dark spots of oxidation. Appears to have been re-gilded in the past 25 years. EXQUISITE AMERICAN CLASSICAL STYLE MAHOGANY SOFA In the manner of Duncan Phyfe(New York. 1768-1854) 19th Century Item# 1402ZAZ25-Q A very fine example of pristine craftsmanship. The crest rail is exquisitely carved from a thick solid plank of mahogany; two nearly identical panels capture oak leaves tied together with flowing ribbon flank the larger central panel of intertwined cornucopia overflowing with sheaves of wheat and fruits. This motif captured the spirit of a period of peace and economic prosperity during which this sofa was crafted. These magnificent landscapes are of exceptional quality, each tiny detail carefully and painstakingly brought to life under the artists knife- it was an expensive detail to have incorporated into a sofa, as any small mistake led to the costly disposal of countless hours of labor and a large plank of ... moregorgeous mahogany. The crest rail has a soft backward slope, completing the cyma form of the back that so harmoniously mirrors the curvature of the arms and sharper bow of the legs. All edges are molded with delicate reeding, giving a distinct angularity to the curvy Greco-Roman inspired form. The tip of each arm is capped with deep floral rosettes carved of the solid, these flowing up from the panels over both legs, each depicting drapery hanging from floral rosettes with a large tassel focal point. I highly doubt you will find anything like it as our family has collected French and Victorian antiques for as long as I can remember and I haven't seen anything close to it. This very special piece originally came from a French Estate in Europe. It is NOT a reproduction- this is the REAL THING. The workmanship and attention to detail is incredible. I cannot say the sofa is in Mint condition. But it is in EXCELLENT condition considering it is over ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. The wood is a deep walnut tone and ORNATELY carved with beautiful details on each hump and center crest. There are also carved roses ... morein the leg portions and carving at the bottom of the seat. The legs are curved in true French Victorian style and are attached to tiny wheels. The wood is in perfect condition with no missing or repaired pieces. The upholstery is AUTHENTIC and ORIGINAL to the piece. The pattern and color is a SAGE GREEN(Celery Green) DAMASK. The back portion of the piece is PHENOMENAL- it is completely TUFTED with BUTTON CENTERS giving the piece a most ELEGANT look. The springs in the seat cushion are still tight and hold weight well. This piece was displayed in our sitting room in Florida for years and only used as an accent piece. The only flaw that stands out is some faint damage- ONLY ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE UPHOLSTERY. It appears that rust like colored stains have emerged(on the back of the left hump area toward the ground above the gimp trim) But it doesn't really show when displayed face forward. IT MAY CLEAN UP WITH UPHOLSTERY CLEANER but it probably would be best reupholstered. There is also a slight puncture in the upper portion of the back. The serpentine shaped crest has a carving consisting of flowers and flowing scrolls with additional floral/scroll carvings on each side of the backrest. The backrest has 3 levels of tufting. The bottom 2 vertically in-line, with the top level offset. The upholstery is in a forest green style color with an acanthus leaf damask pattern. FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE GILTWOOD ANTIQUE SETTEE France c. 1900 Item# 411PJB15Q The carved surfaces of this exquisite Louis XVI style settee are remarkable. Embellished with an attractive mix of details carved of solid wood offset by gesso decorations under a burnished gilding. The crest rail is a complex display of twisted ribbon backed along the outer edge by twisting rope below the raised central motif of crossed torchieres. The open arm supports are delicately carved with a deep and robust acanthus carving, this furling over at the top in lifelike realism. The back and seat are comfortably upholstered in a cream and blue linen with floral designs, the whole remaining in quite fine condition- other than a few minor blemishes here and there, it is absolutely useable exactly as is, though that certainly depends on your own tastes. The settee ... morerests over turned and tapered legs with stop-fluting inset with small flame carvings over ball feet. A very beautiful scalloped back 1860's Victorian sofa! The hand carved apron really sets this sofa off with pretty scrolls. Shells and feathers detailing. What an eye-catching design! There is a small piece of the wood missing from the apron and you can see this best in the fourth photo. The piece was reupholstered at some point in time with a cheery floral pattern. There is a small area of the fabric at the back top corner that has loose piping(please see the last photo) It could easily be glued down. There are white smudges on some of the wood trim. Profusely Carved Antique Italian Settee Bench Sofa Carved Faces, Birds, More WOW
Here's a Great Highly Carved Italian Settee Perfect for a Hall. Living Room or at the End of a Bed. The piece was hand carved in Italy around 1920 and is in Good Condition with age appropriate wear. The finish is lighter in the high spots which to me adds to the appearance and speaks to the age of the settee. The one finial on the back is missing the very top point. That finial and the center top carved piece are held in place by dowels and lift off so they need to be re glued. I would have done that but it will be safer to transport it with them off. It will not require any clamping, just some wood glue in the holes where the dowels fit. Of course there are some scrapes and dings but nothing that I see as distracting. The cushion has older upholstery which works if it's your style. The settee measures approximately 57 and 3/8" ... morelong, 22" deep, and about 33 and 3/4" in height.
