Handsome, Decorated ... moreAncient Terra Cotta Oil Lamp about 100 A.D. Roman Provincial Moesia(Bulgaria) CLASSIFICATION: Roman Provincial Moesia Decorated Terra Cotta Oil Lamp. ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

Not cheap silver electroplate! These are high-quality solid sterling silver 17mm endless hoop earrings. Other sizes and styles available. Please see my store. DETAILS: The Romans also used silver coins to pay their legionary armies. The coins were also used for most daily transactions by administrators and traders throughout the empire. Roman silver coins served as an important means of political propaganda. Extolling the virtues of Rome and her emperors, and offering historians realistic portraitures of Rome’s Emperors. Many public works and architectural achievements were also depicted(among them the Coliseum, the Circus Maximus) some are known only because of their depictions on those coins. In addition many important political events were recorded on the coinage. Roman coins depicted the assassination of Julius Caesar, alliances between cities, between emperors, between armies, etc. And many contenders for the throne of Rome are known only through their coinage. By the second century A.D. historians estimate that there were 3½ billion silver coins in circulation through the Roman Empire. Produced by over 400 mints. The stability of Rome’s economy and currency depended primarily on the output of the silver mines in Spain which they had wrested from the Carthaginians. In celebration of that heritage here are two gorgeous, high quality solid sterling silver endless hoop earrings. Please do not confuse these with cheap silver. These are high-quality, solid sterling silver earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime. HISTORY OF SILVER: After gold. Silver is the metal most widely used in jewelry and the most malleable. The oldest silver artifacts found by archaeologists date from ancient Sumeria about 4,000 B.C. At many points in the ancient world, it was actually more costly than gold, particularl

Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more common

It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. This concentric circle was intended to provide the wearer a charm providing protection against the effects of"an evil eye" There was an ancient belief that some evil sorcerers or witches had the ability to transmit evil with ju

The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

What lapis lazuli, carnelian, and turquoise was to the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Sumerians, and Babylonians; jade was to the ancient Chinese. It was the gemstone of gemstones, it’s name synonymous with“gold” in other languages. Good as gold” the golden age” such expressions would have used the word“yu” for jade, rather than the word gold. This pendant seems to have two“faces” to it. With the point(the narrow end) on the bottom it seems to be a stylized face. But with the point at the top, as it seemingly would have intended to be worn, it seems to depict two figures, back to back, sitting beneath a tree. It might be a reference to the male and female personification of“Yin and Yang” The symbolism of Yin-Yang, also known as“Tai-Chi” refers to the I-Ching concept of the cycles of life, the balance between them, sometimes equated with the cyclical relatio
