He lived and worked in New York City for nearly forty years where he enjoyed a career in book publishing, teaching and art. He states that he was drawn or sketched ever since he can remember. As a youngster his grandmother. Isabella Keyser, who was a fairly well-known painter in her day, encouraged him to draw. That was the beginning of art as being a part of his life, which is true to this day. His first formal training in drawing and composition was at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School which he attended thanks to the G.I. Bill after serving the Marines in World War II. Schooling was interrupted for a couple of years as he was recalled to serve in the Korean conflict. When he returned from duty he attended the Art Students League of New York to again study drawing. She looks off in the distance and seems as if she will be very grateful for a bus seat. The other figure is male and is shown almost completely in black silhouette against the bright gold from the sunset hitting the wall behind him. He wears a hat. His arms are crossed. One sees a bit of dark flesh-tone on his arm and a stripe of turquoise blue on his shirt- caught where the sun apparently found a crack to reach him. He, too, seems to be a laborer, perhaps a Mexican immigrant. The work is in pristine condition and signed by the artist. The frame and liner are also in excellent condition.

For sale is a signed and dated portrait painting of a WW11 Soldier. The framed painting measures 33" x 25" with an image size approx. 20" x 28" The frame shows paint loss and could use paint restoration. The painting is in very good to excellent original condition and is signed and dated lower right 1946. The artists name is illegible. The uniformed soldier has an American Red Cross patch on his left shoulder and a couple of medals and an ARC Military Wefare pin. On the back of the canvas there is writing" A.J. Stafford" who could be the soldier. It also has writing that the painting was completed Mothers Day in Germany 1946. I have discovered an obituary with the name A.J. Stafford and this could be the soldier in the painting. Below is a copy of the obituary: Allison J. Stafford— NORFOLK- Allison John Stafford. ... more88, passed away peacefully in Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital August 8, 2007. Born June 11, 1919, he was the son of the late Jay Douglas Stafford and Margaret Day Stafford. After attending Cornell University, Allison joined the Army and served in World War II as a member of Battle Group 396. It was during this tour of duty in Germany that he met and married his wife, Gladys Abineri. The couple made their home in Norfolk, Virginia, where they raised a daughter, Elizabeth. Allison served as a field director in the American Red Cross for 37 years. His job took him around the world to places including the Marshall Islands. Germany, France, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. He helped to develop the life-saving program for the seven Mercury astronauts who trained at Little Creek Amphibious Base. ufer attributed to Walter Ufer(1876- 1936) Historic Taos Impressionist 19/20th Century Original frame and. I think the canvas was mounted on board soon after it was painted. Earliest known painters of the region were Ernest Blumenschein and Bert Phillips who fortuitously stopped near Taos in the late 19th century. The painting is 6 x 8 inches. Including the frame it is 9.5 x 11.5 inches. Condition is mint; some craquelure which is natural(I know art dealers who do not understand this! and the edges have a slight buildup of dirt because of the frame insert. This could be cleaned by a professional conservator in minutes. Looks like there could be a signature underneath the shrub on the far right. A truly historic work where a definitive attribution would add to its value, but not to the beauty and importance of such an early piece. Otto Wix had two prominent patrons. The Knudsens and the Wilcoxes. The watercolor sketch is in the collection of Grove Farm Homestead, Lihue- previously run by the Wilcox estate. The watercolor sketch measures 14 5/8" x 21" about 30% smaller than this piece. The piece comes out of a lengthy storage in Kailua, Oahu- in a turn of the century period frame.
