The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered subhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. These were mostly produced from Brass/Bronze using the lost wax casting method originally, and the fact that this is a wooden piece, further suggests this. The piece does demonstrate advanced age, in various minor age cracks, and wear marks. It is finely detailed, and produced from very dense wood, making it quite heavy for its size. The piece depicts a bust of a Benin Warrior in full armor with typical facial scarifications.
