DESCRIPTION: HUGE hardcover in dustjacket w/magnificent color plates(199 pages) Metropolitan Museum of Art(1972) Composed in the tenth century by the poet Firdowsi. The"Shah-nameb" or"Book of Kings" is Iran's central literary work, a historical epic peopled with monarchs. Monarchs some of inspiring goodness, others of unmatched wickedness. Also peopled with handsome paladins, beautiful maidens, malevolent witches, and treacherous demons. The particular manuscript of the"Shah-nameb" introduced here by Stuart Cary Welch, Curator of Indian and Islamic Painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, is the most sumptuous one every produced. Containing scores of paintings where other sixteenth-century manuscripts contained perhaps a dozen. The Houghton"Shah-nameb" identified with the name of its owner, Arthur A. Court artisans and craftsmen continued their work on the 759 folios for the better part of two decades. As a consequence, the book offers a fascinating mixture of artistic styles. The extraordinary quality of the paintings was known even in Shah Tahmasp's time. One commentator wrote then of Sultan Muhammad's page representing"The Court of Gayumars" the boldest painters hung their heads in shame before it" While that superb image. Reproduced within the book in color and gold, is called by Stuart Welch"perhaps the greatest painting in Iranian art: others of the pages he has selected for color reproduction and special comment are clearly in the same area of merit. The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity by Carsten Peter Thiede. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 256 pages. Publisher: Palgrave ... morefor St. Martin’s Press; 2001) Carsten Peter Thiede’s bestseller. Eyewitness to Jesus” written with journalist Matthew d’Ancona, established him as one of the leading figures on the history and texts of the first century. Now in this controversial new book, Thiede focuses on what are perhaps the most enigmatic ancient documents ever found; the Dead Sea Scrolls. Drawing upon his own pioneering methods in restoring the scrolls, Thiede reveals that the Essene Library represented by the scrolls demonstrates that the first Christians were essentially a Jewish movement, not a radically new and fundamentally different religion. This perspective clearly has major implications. It affects both how we view the scrolls and it changes how we consider the history of first-century Christianity. Unraveling the complete history of the scrolls since their discovery in 1947. Thiede places them in the context of what has previously been unknown about the Essene community at Qumram. His identification of scroll fragments from Mark’s Gospel and Paul’s first letter to Timothy indicates that such Jewish-Christian writings were written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Moreover. It also suggests that the Essene community viewed the early Christians as fellow Jews, whose provocative ideas about the true Messiah they wanted to scrutinize. Eye-opening and stimulating, The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish Origins of Christianity” reveals for the first time the fruits of much painstaking and original research. CONDITION: New. Never read. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

The Book of Lilith by Barbara Black Koltuv. Ph.D. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 127 pages. Publisher: Nicolas Hays(1986) ISBN: 9780892540143. The Book of Lilith tells the story of Lilith. Who was really the first woman created by God, and who just happened to have been created before Adam. Her job is to give all the things in the world souls, while Adam's is to create rules and law out of chaos. Unfortunately, Adam likes to have sex with Lilith only in the Adam-on-top position. This leads to, shall we say, problems" The Book of Lilith is alternately funny, serious, surreal, and amazing as Lilith embarks on a Zen journey around the world giving things souls and giving birth to a god. It is more than a little bit deep, and yet very, very entertaining. Lilith’s demonic origins are found in Jewish folklore, her name and personality ultimately derived from a Babylonian-Assyrian demon named Lilit, or Lilu, though Lilith may have had an association with even earlier goddesses. In rabbinic literature Lilith is variously depicted as the mother of Adam’s demonic offspring following his separation from Eve, or as his first wife, who scoffed at him and left him because he insisted on the male-superior sexual position, the so-called“missionary” position. Three angels tried in vain to force her to return to Adam. Ultimately the more docile Eve was created for Adam as a replacement for Lilith. Refusing to couple with Adam. Lilith was said to have bred with demons, producing 100 offspring a day. Lilith appears in J.W. von Goethe’s“Faust” and Dante Gabriel Rosetti’s“Eden Bower” In the twentieth century, Lilith became something of a feminist symbol for her rebellion against patriarchal ways. The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) t

Le Morte D'Arthur(Volume 1) by Sir Thomas Malory. Edited by Janet Cowen, With an Introduction by John Lawlor. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 488 pages. Publisher: ... morePenguin Books; 1986) Edited and first published by William Caxton in 1485. Sir Thomas Malory's unique and splendid version of the Arthurian legend tells an immortal story of love, adventure, chivalry, treachery, and death. The legends of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table have inspired some of the greatest works of literature; from Cervantes's Don Quixote to Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Although many versions exist, Malory's stands as the classic rendition. Malory wrote the book while in Newgate Prison during the last three years of his life; it was published some fourteen years later, in 1485 A.D. by William Caxton. The tales, steeped in the magic of Merlin, the powerful cords of the chivalric code, and the age-old dramas of love and death, resound across the centuries. CONDITION: New. Never read. Adventure, chivalry, treachery, and death. Edited and first published by William Caxton in 1485, Le Morte d'Arthur" is Sir Thomas Mallory's unique and splendid version of the Arthurian legend. Mordred's treason, the knightly exploits of Tristan, Lancelot's fatally divided loyalties and his love for Gueneviere, the quest for the Holy Grail; all the elements are there woven into a wonderful completeness by the magic of his prose style. The result is not only one of the most readable accounts of the knights of the Round Table, but also one of the most moving. As the story advances toward the inevitable tragedy of Arthur's death, the effect is cumulative, rising with an impending sense of doom and tragedy towards its shattering finale. Edited and published by William Caxton in 1485. Malory's moving prose romance looks back to an ideal
