The Mummy: Unwrap The Ancient Secrets of the Mummies’ Tombs by Joyce Tyldesley. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 128 pages. Publisher: Carlton Book; 1999) ISBN: ... more1858687713. Tyldesley wraps basically familiar information into intriguing bits of details and highlights it all with recent knowledge and findings. She shows how research into ancient history yields facts about even the most aged mummies. The author begins her historical account by considering the most ancient dried bodies buried in the arid environment of Egypt and then provides a general overview of the customs and techniques of mummification through the ages. While some of the information may be familiar. Such as the evisceration of major organs in the bodies of the pharaohs, there are details to whet interest. For example, it wasn't uncommon for the ancient Egyptians to have their pets mummified and sacred animals were mummified by the millions. Tyldesley also includes some novels and movies and shows how these media have affected the general public's belief about the practice. The author's easy-to-read and comprehensive writing style is teamed up with plenty of photographs and current information to give young adults an enticing view of this popular topic. CONDITION: Light shelf wear and rubbing to the cover. Otherwise in Great Like New condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Glass Unguentarium. ATTRIBUTION: Antiochia. Eastern Provincial Roman Empire(Syria) 2nd Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 17 millimeters(2/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 24 millimeters(1 inch) Base Diameter: 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) Weight: 5.70 grams. CONDITION: Very good though bears evidence of a very neat. Professional repair. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more common

Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. These works were

NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In ancient India citrine was used to protect children from evil spirits. And as an aid finding a suitable match for marriage. Citrine was also an export trade good, which traveled from Southern India to ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. The first mention of citrine in ancient Mediterranean sources comes from the fourth century B.C. Greeks. The Greeks and Romans used citrine for intaglios and in jewelry as well during the first and second centuries. The gemstones would reach Rome and Greece either via the Silk Route(if overland) or if by sea, they would have crossed the Arabian and Red Sea by ship, then overland to Alexandria in Egypt, before being distributed by trade across and around the Mediterranean. Celebrating mankind's cultural inheritance here is a large. Very clean, 1antique cognac-brandy colored faceted citrine from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, citrine has remained a very popular gemstone through the 20th century. The gemstone was hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. This is a very fine, richly colored cognac-brandy colored semi-precious gemstone, the color and flavor much like a dark golden honey. Not cheap silver electroplate! These are high-quality solid sterling silver 10mm top wire hoop earrings. Other sizes and styles available. Please see my store. At many points in the ancient world. Silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Many historians have argued that it was the possession and exploitation of the Laurium mines by the Athenians that allowed them to become the most powerful city state in Greece. At the time these mines started producing prodigious amounts of silver, the price of silver in ancient Egypt was pegged at half that of gold. Enough silver was mined and refined at Laurium(and sold to Egypt) to finance the expansion of Athens as a trading and naval power. Estimates are that Laurium produced 160 million ounces of silver. Worth six billion dollars today(when silver is by comparison to gold relatively cheap and abundant) As the production of silver from the Laurium mines ultimately diminished, Greek silver production shifted to mines in Macedonia. In celebration of that heritage here we offer two gorgeous, high quality solid sterling silver top wire hoop earrings. Please do not confuse these with cheap silver electroplated earrings. These are high-quality earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime, made from solid sterling silver. HISTORY OF SILVER: After gold. Silver is the metal most widely used in jewelry and the most malleable. The oldest silver artifacts found by archaeologists date from ancient Sumeria about 4,000 B.C. At many points in the ancient world, it was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Silver is found in native form(i.e. in nuggets) as an alloy with gold(electrum) and in ores containing sulfur, arsenic, antimony or chlorine. Much of the silver originally found in the ancient world was actu

Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ancient Christians regarded the blood-red garnet to be symbolic of Christ’s blood sacrifice. According to ancient Hebrew mythology. A giant garnet provided interior lighting for Noah's Ark. It is also believed that garnet, described as“nopek” was one of the twelve gemstones described in the Bible in Exodus 28:17-20 as adorning Aaron’s breastplate, representing the twelve tribes of ancient Israel. Ancient cultures including the Celts, Greeks, Hebrews, Persians and Romans highly valued garnet. The ancient Persians regarded garnet as a royal stone, and only royalty was allowed to possess the gemstone. Most ancient Mediterranean populations believed that a garnet could give its wearer guidance in the night, allowing them to see when others could not. Here's a gorgeous. Richly textured, regally hued red faceted garnet gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia, where the production of garnet has gone on for many centuries. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. This particular variety of garnet is especially favored for its dark, regal, blood red tones. The gemstone is very clean, crystal clear, and exquisitely colored. It possesses great lustre, lots of flash, and at least to the eye, is essentially flawless. It is truly a gorgeously colored, brilliant, sparkling semi-precious gemstone.
