Otherwise just the minor bumps and bruises consistent with prolonged burial in the earth. The normal potting blemishes associated with hand production. Missing the original lid. The neck is crooked. It appears as if it started“drooping” while in the kiln. DETAIL: A glazed earthenware funerary jar from the Song Dynasty of Ancient China. These were used to leave offerings of rice. Wine, or some other gift for the deceased. The light green glaze became known as“Celadon Green” so named for the color– and is one of the most celebrated styles of ancient China. The lower portion of the neck possesses a circumferential display of human figures, believed to represent the deceased’s family or ancestors. Above the ring of figures wrapping around the circumference of the neck is a depiction of a dragon. With respect to this particular specimen, the glaze shows some minor oxidation(decomposition) due to caustic alkalinity of soil in which it was buried. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 140 millimeters(5 2/3 inches) Diameter: 180 millimeters(7 1/4 inches) at shoulder; 99 millimeters(4 inches) at top lip; 100 millimeters(4 inches) at base. CONDITION: Exceptionally good! Extraordinary! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial since ancient times. All quite normal for a 2.000 year old vase. DETAIL: A splendid. Exceptionally well preserved large sized earthenware jar from the Han Dynasty of Ancient China. The jar is the size of a very large melon– almost the size of a soccer ball. What’s really remarkable is that it is seemingly about 2,000 years old and is entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little dings and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then spent twenty centuries buried. There are simply the normal blemishes(bumps and dips) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware jar such as this) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Eur
