They are more accurately known as spindle whorls, each with a unique and different pattern. Amongst these whorls, only three have a plain surface. In Mali. Antique glass vase, 19th century. Enamel painted gladiator. Like terracotta.
This vase is very unusual; it is glass but is decorated to look like a Greek teracotta vase- the base is white glass and the burnt orange is painted on top. The gladiator is painted in enamel paint so has a slightly raised effect like a cameo. The vase is in perfect condition and measures 21 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter. I think that this is a very interesting vase and would love to find out more about it if anyone can tell me. An ancient Chinese terracotta figure of an infantryman. With beautifully preserved pigmentation, dating to the Northern Wei Dynasty, circa 386- 534 A.D. This rare ancient Chinese figure of an infantryman conveys an aura of simultaneous grace and strength. The figure is shown standing tall. Dressed in the traditional attire of an ancient warrior. His red robe has been pulled down from the right shoulder, exposing the powerful bare arm and chest. His left hand holds a large shield whilst the right is pierced to take a wooden spear, now long since perished. The stylised features reflect the contemporary tendencies of Buddhist art, with the large square head bent forward in an imitation of large-scale statuary and the mouth modeled with a gentle, serene smile. Despite these stylistic influences, the artist has also displayed a clear interest ... morein reproducing the natural form of his subject, with the major components of the body articulated in typical Wei style. The militaristic Northern Wei Dynasty. Who conquered the small, weak northern Chinese states in the late 4th century AD were clearly regarded as foreign barbarians by the more'civilized' south. This rare older primitive terracotta pot from Timor was all hand crafted. With unique motifs enhanced with hand painted natural pigments. item P14 Traditional famous“Vermasse” terracotta pottery from remote East Timor Island. Indonesia one of a kind. 7" X 8" and 21 1/2" all around. We collected these unusual extremely decorative pots for many years. They are not made anymore. Discovered on the premises(long before the Timor war that split the island into 2 took place) these older hand crafted pieces are impossible to find today as whatever still existed at the time the fighting started was broken during the violent conflicts. In perfect condition. Completely handcrafted(centuries old process) and adorned with motifs in relief combined with geometrical designs reminiscent of old American Indian Pottery usually motifs are of ... moremen or animals. Gecko for example& hand-painted with local enhancing natural color pigments. It is a unique collector item. A true work of primitive art and extremely decorative. Old pots such as this one below are much prettier than the ones produced today. We have included many close ups of it here. It came from the Vermasse region of Timor and was used by the natives of Manatuto to boil water on an outside fire in order to make it ready for human consumption( water borne diseases are a major problem in East Timor. The traditional solution is still to boil the water to make it safe) This pot. Which was made with a fine red clay mix combined with river sand& rice husk ash sieved thru a fly screen and formed by hand, still bears some charcoal black marks on the outside from the burns of bonfires made from cow manure, burns which add to its charm and authenticity.
