Publisher: University of California Press; 1976) This second volume of new translations is designed along the lines of the first Volume. In keeping with the ancient view. It defines literature broadly so as to include monumental inscriptions carved on stone and literary texts written on papyrus. Where the first volume outlined the gradual creation of Egyptian literary genres in the course of many centuries, the present one shows the elaboration of the genres within a single cultural period, and in a relatively short span of time. The literary production of the New Kingdom was much larger than that of the earlier periods. Hence even a whole volume devoted to it can do no more than focus on the highlights. Moreover. In the New Kingdom both the monumental inscriptions and the papyrus texts usually ran to greater length than their Middle Kingdom counterparts. The selection made from the vast quantity of stone-carved inscriptions contains famous pieces along with some less renowned ones. Together they illustrate the principal topics that were deemed appropriate to the always functional monumental context. Similarly the works written on papyrus have been selected to show the variety of themes and forms. And to single out those compositions that we outstanding in their day and have retained a timeless inte

We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Publisher: Shire Egyptology; 1995) The ancient Egyptians believed that the statutory agricultural labor imposed on them in order to utilize the Nile floods would continue in the afterlife. To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti. A figurine which they hoped would deputize for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of'draft-dodging' the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. A concise up-to-date treatment in English has long been lacking, and this account will be useful to students, art historians, collectors and others. CONDITION: NEW. New oversized softcover. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1969) Thoth. The ibis-headed god of wisdom, inventor of the art of writing. Osiris, the dead god who arose and set the pattern for death and resurrection gods ever since. Isis, the great mother goddess, wandering through the reed swamps. Anubis, jackal-headed conductor of the dead. Bast, the cat goddess. Set, the evil serpent. Ptah, the living mummy. For more than 2,500 years, since the days of Herodotus, students have found the gods of ancient Egypt a source of fascination and wonder. Strange beings who lived in a world of their own(as opposed to the human gods of the European peoples) irrational powers and menaces. Sometimes animal-like, ... moresometimes superhuman, sometimes incalculable in their evil potentialities. They still have the power to move men’s thoughts. By far the most thorough. Most useful coverage of the gods of Ancient Egypt is the present book by Dr. Budge of the British Museum, one of the foremost Egyptologists of the modern era. In it is presented practically everything known about the high gods, the local gods, demigods, demons, and mythological figures of Khem. Dr. Budge provides full information on the origins of the ancient religion and its peculiarly Egyptian aspects. On the evolution of cults, rites, and gods; the priesthoods; the heretical aberration of Akhenaten and the Aten cult. As well the cult of Osiris; the Book of the Dead and its rites; the scared animals and birds; heaven and hell, and much other secret wisdom that has been discovered hidden in mummy cases or written on tomb walls. The text is profusely illustrated with many reproductions of tomb and mummy-case paintings. While many full texts are presented with both hieroglyphs and translation. Dr. Budge’s book is a standard work in the history of religion. It is also a most useful background book for anyone seriously

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN - ROMAN FAYUM PORTRAITS 1st-4th Century Funerary Art in Egypt
Fayum Portraits” By Berenice Geoffrey-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline Publishing in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Miraculously preserved by the dry sands of the Egyptian desert. Some thousand 1st-4th century painted portraits—called"Fayum" after the region they were found in—have fascinated artists and archaeologists for their strange presence. Many are idealized images with dramatic, dark-eyed gazes, yet others are startlingly realistic, capturing the character of individuals from millennia ago. In all, a portrait of a province, which became Roman, comes alive. This book tries to pierce the secret of these fragments of faces. Who were the authors of these portraits, whose modernity of execution does not cease to surprise us? What society was sufficiently rich and proud to exhibit itself ... morethus after death? Loeb[1867-1933] retired early from the family business and spent the rest of his life traveling. Collecting, and doing good things with his money. The bronzes illustrated in this catalog, along with this ancient pottery, were eventually given to the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich. Loeb explained his philanthropy by writing- ... moreIn an age when the Humanities are being neglected more perhaps than at any time since the Middle Ages, and when men's minds are turning more than ever before to the practical and the material, it does not suffice to make pleas, however eloquent and convincing, for the safeguarding and further enjoyment of our greatest heritage from the past. Assembling one of the truly fine and select private collections of his era. The objects included Near Eastern, Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities. His February 22. 1990 New York Times obituary reported- Norbert Schimmel, a collector of antiquities who gave an important group of ancient Egyptian reliefs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1985, died of pneumonia on Friday at his home in Longboat Key, Fla. He was 85 years old, and had lived for many years in Great Neck, L.I. Mr. Schimmel, who also backed major archeological excavations in the Middle ... moreEast, was known in the antiquities field as a discerning collector possessed of a keen eye, who did not rely on curators for confirmation of his tastes. In some 35 years, he developed what is today considered one of the world's outstanding private collections of Mediterranean antiquities. He exhibited his holdings at museums throughout the world, and donated objects to many of them. In 1975, 300 works from his collection were shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ranging in time over more than 6,000 years and covering Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Near Eastern cultures. As a collector he was an inspiration to the antiquities field. In the sense that he quietly and devotedly promoted the appreciation of ancient art through sage collecting and through the generosity he manifested to several collections throughout the country, said Maxwell L. Anderson, the director of the Emory University Museum of Art and Archeology in Atlanta. And he did it without fanfare or desire for recognition. He was a trustee of the museum for many years. Serving on the board's acquisition committee until he resigned last year. Always modest about his collecting, Mr. Schimmel once
