The piece is not marked but dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The piece Displays Wonderfully with great blue throughout. It is in Good condition. Especially for its age, without any chips or cracks from damage. There are several manufacturing imperfections from the firing process. Which was customary for pieces of stoneware of this vintage and only adds to the character and authenticity. There is what appears to be a popped air pocket near the bottom of the piece(photo 11) a tiny piece of extra material trapped under the glaze at the lip(last photo) and normal glaze crazing. The pitcher measures about 8 1/4 inches tall. Check out my! I am selling other art pottery pieces and will combine shipping whenever possible. Largely because of the efforts of the museum's first director, Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who went to Cyprus in 1866 hoping to excavate works to rival the finds of Heinrich Schliemann at Troy. This gorgeously illustrated catalog presents some 500 objects from the prehistoric, Archaic, Classical/Hellenistic, and Roman periods in more than 300 color photographs of glass, stone sculpture, terra-cotta figurines, lamps, pottery, jewelry, and weapons. After the[Civil War] he was appointed United States consul at Larnaca in Cyprus(1865–1877) During his stay on Cyprus he carried out excavations which resulted in the discovery of a large number of antiquities. The collection was purchased by the newly expanded Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Cesnola became the first director in 1879. He is the author of'Cyprus, its ancient Cities, Tombs and Temples' 1877) a travel book of considerable service to the practical antiquary; and of a'Descriptive Atlas of the Cesnola Collection of Cypriote Antiquities' He died in New York and was interred at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY. Assembling one of the truly fine and select private collections of his era. The objects included Near Eastern, Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman antiquities. His February 22. 1990 New York Times obituary reported- Norbert Schimmel, a collector of antiquities who gave an important group of ancient Egyptian reliefs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1985, died of pneumonia on Friday at his home in Longboat Key, Fla. He was 85 years old, and had lived for many years in Great Neck, L.I. Mr. Schimmel, who also backed major archeological excavations in the Middle ... moreEast, was known in the antiquities field as a discerning collector possessed of a keen eye, who did not rely on curators for confirmation of his tastes. In some 35 years, he developed what is today considered one of the world's outstanding private collections of Mediterranean antiquities. He exhibited his holdings at museums throughout the world, and donated objects to many of them. In 1975, 300 works from his collection were shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, ranging in time over more than 6,000 years and covering Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Near Eastern cultures. As a collector he was an inspiration to the antiquities field. In the sense that he quietly and devotedly promoted the appreciation of ancient art through sage collecting and through the generosity he manifested to several collections throughout the country, said Maxwell L.
