This rare older primitive terracotta pot from Timor was all hand crafted. With unique motifs created in relief or 3D, and enhanced with hand painted natural pigments. item P16 Traditional famous“Vermasse” terracotta pottery from remote East Timor Island. Indonesia one of a kind. 9" X 7" and 25" all around. We collected these unusual extremely decorative pots for many years. They are not made anymore. Discovered on the premises(long before the Timor war that split the island into 2 took place) these older hand crafted pieces are impossible to find today as whatever still existed at the time the fighting started was broken during the violent conflicts. In perfect condition. Completely handcrafted(centuries old process) and adorned with motifs in relief combined with geometrical designs reminiscent of old American Indian Pottery ... moreusually motifs are of men or animals. Gecko for example& hand-painted with local enhancing natural color pigments. It is a unique collector item. A true work of primitive art and extremely decorative. Old pots such as this one below are much prettier than the ones produced today. We have included many close ups of it here. It came from the Vermasse region of Timor and was used by the natives of Manatuto to boil water on an outside fire in order to make it ready for human consumption( water borne diseases are a major problem in East Timor. The traditional solution is still to boil the water to make it safe) This pot. Which was made with a fine red clay mix combined with river sand& rice husk ash sieved thru a fly screen and formed by hand, still bears some charcoal black marks on the outside from the burns of bonfires made from cow manure, burns which add to its charm and authenticity. This piece likely dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and depicts a full figured female with anoval face. Arched brows, slit coffee bean shaped eyes, ridged nose, thinly slit mouth, ridged neck ornaments, protruding breasts, and a large beehive coiffure. The piece is made of terracotta and is decorated with a polished. Burnished black reduction-fired finish overall. The expression on the woman’s face is beatific and has a spiritual feeling. ... moreVery expressive. This is a finely made image of the great 18th Century writer after the Houdon original and has both the impressed maker's mark on the back of the plinth as well as having the miraculously remaining paper label of the retail gallery from which it was sold in the mid 19th Century in Paris at the Palais Royale! This expressive figure is shown standing tall wearing a high peaked cap and with the face relaxed into a serene expression. Clad in a long tunic belted under the arms and worn over loose trousers. The elongated sleeves falling to the lower legs. The militaristic Northern Wei Dynasty. Who conquered the small, weak northern Chinese states in the late 4th century A.D. were clearly regarded as foreign barbarians by the more'civilized' south. The Wei possessed enormous military prowess and this is reflected in their prominent depictions of soldiers. Vintage Terracotta Set/3 Angel Ornaments
Set/3 Vintage Terracotta Angels. Very nicely detailed. Safe for outdoors. Approximately 51/2" to 6" High. 4" Wide Drummer Angel has Broken Wing Used on a Victorian themed Christmas tree years ago. Have no clue who the manufacturer is or the exact age. Probably early 1980's. Family piece. In my quest to explore. Clean-out and de-clutter, I've tackled the attic this weekend. I've found lots of family pieces packed in boxes and stored there. Holiday decorations. Etc from early 1960's to around mid 1980's.
