DETAIL: The oldest silver artifacts found by archaeologists date from ancient Sumeria about 4.000 B.C. At many points in the ancient world, silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians believed that the skin of their gods was composed of gold, and their bones were thought to be of silver. The first large-scale silver mines were in Anatolia(ancient Turkey) and Armenia, where as early as 4,000 B.C. silver was extracted from lead ores. From Turkey and Armenia silver refining technology spread to the rest of Asia Minor and Europe. By about 2,500 B.C. the Babylonians were one of the major refiners of silver. The high value ancient cultures place on silver is demonstrated by the fact that some of the richest burials in history uncovered by archaeologists have been from this time frame; that of Queen Puabi of Ur, Sumeria(26th century B.C. Tutankhamun(14th century B.C. and the rich Trojan(25th century B.C. and Mycenaean(18th century B.C. treasures uncovered by Heinrich Schliemann. In celebration of this heritage. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 81 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 17 millimeters(2/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 24 millimeters(1 inch) Base Diameter: 12 millimeters(1/2 inch) Weight: 5.70 grams. CONDITION: Very good though bears evidence of a very neat. Professional repair. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more common

Not cheap silver electroplate! These are two gorgeous. High quality solid sterling silver earrings. These are high-quality earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime. Measurements: Length: 21mm. Breadth: 18mm. Weight: 2.61 grams. DETAILS: At many points in the ancient world. Silver was actually more costly than gold, particularly in ancient Egypt. Many historians have argued that it was the possession and exploitation of the Laurium mines by the Athenians that allowed them to become the most powerful city state in Greece. At the time these mines started producing prodigious amounts of silver, the price of silver in ancient Egypt was pegged at half that of gold. Enough silver was mined and refined at Laurium(and sold to Egypt) to finance the expansion of Athens as a trading and naval power. Estimates are that Laurium produced 160 million ounces of silver, worth six billion dollars today(when silver is by comparison to gold relatively cheap and abundant) As the production of silver from the Laurium mines ultimately diminished, Greek silver production shifted to mines in Macedonia. In celebration of that heritage here is a pair of gorgeous. Solid sterling silver designer earrings. I picked these up at a trade show recently as samples for a fraction of their retail value, and am passing the savings. These are very stylish, high-quality earrings produced in the USA from solid sterling silver(not cheap electroplated base metal) I’m not permitted to reveal the name of the fashion label these are intended to carry, but they’re exclusive, high-end earrings. I have only a few pair, so if you like the style, don’t procrastinate, they’ll be gone, and I have no ability to restock them! HISTORY OF SILVER: After gold. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstone as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Rubies were amongst the earliest gemstones traded by mankind. Since the 5th millennium B.C. From the most ancient times all the way through the medieval world, ruby was worn by the classical Mediterranean civilizations(Greeks, Romans, Persians, and the Indo-European“Celtic” peoples) as an amulet for protection from lightening, plagues, poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. The ancient populations of the Mediterranean also believed that the color of a ruby would change mirroring changes in the health of its owner, and that the color would drain from a ruby at the moment its owner died. The Bible makes numerous mentions of ruby, first as one of the twelve precious stones created by God when he created mankind. Ruby is then described as“the lord of gems” when one was given to Aaron on the command of God. In the classical world, rubies from Afghanistan, Ceylon, and Burma were traded in the ancient port cities of the Eastern Mediterranean(often by Phoenicians) and from there traveled throughout Europe. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field.
