The coffee table was purchased at J.H. Biggars. A then-exclusive furniture store in Pasadena, California(Biggars is still in business, located at 860 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA) The coffee table has been in the family ever since. I have stored this table for a number of years. I'd hoped that it would someday be a focal point in my Malibu beach house. But the beach house never materialized(ha! so alas, we are finally dispersing possessions that we have no room for. Here is a description of the table: The travertine marble top sits atop a wood. Triangle-shaped base. I’m not sure what kind of wood this is. It is finished a pale blond color. The base is very sturdy. The white travertine marble top is a triangle shape with rounded corners. It is more than an inch thick and very heavy. The marble has grooves and holes in it. Which is a natural part of the stone. The surface of the table is flat and shiny. As you can see in the photos. There are a few water spots and one water ring on the marble top. These are superficial and they can possibly be buffed or polished out. There is some wear on the base and brass feet. As you can see from the photos. There are no maker marks on the table base or top. Other than the number"500" stamped on both, which identified the pieces as a set. The marble top measures 60-inches long by 41.5-inches wide. It has, as you can see, yellowing from the years, on the upper part of the stem, as well as yellowing underneath, along with slight cracking/crazing on the surface and fingerprints, shown in pics 7& 8. The base is 16 3/4" in diameter. This will ship freight or Greyhound Express. The cost for freight will probably be cheaper and safer than having it packed professionally and shipped GE. I have had the“torpedo” tested at Picatinny Arsenal and they certified it as“inert” Museums would not allow us to show this item without a certificate that shows it was safe. The copy of the certification goes to the winning bidder along with the original patent tag. The tag is certainly timeworn and in less than good condition. But attests to the genuineness of the model. I purchased it from the O Rundle Gilbert collection years ago. Tag attached to model in the pictures is from a museum showing. The model weighs about 10 lbs and appears to be made of lead. The upper part is brass and iron. There is a brass threaded insert in the top of the base. I have tried to research A. T. Ballantine in the Morristown area( I live close) with the census records and found the following. Alexander Thompson Ballantine. A famous name in the NY and NJ area. He formed a company called Ballantine and Howland and went to Titusville PA to sell the Ballantine Torpedo. I have quite a few New Jersey models and will continue to post them as I am able. The friction primer has been removed and no longer exists. It is the part that explodes the torpedo while lowered into the oil(or water) well. I invite inquiries and will answer questions about the model. Even though I have my own site which lists my available patent models from the 1800s collection. Original strapping and foam are present(see photos) CONDITION Structurally excellent. Excellent finish to legs. Light wear only. Upholstery is not original, it is stained and needs to be replaced. Original foam inside has hardened and begun to powder(see close-up photo) So, this will need to be replaced during reupholstering.
