TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The First Crusade by Steven Runciman. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover: 201 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2005) When Pope Urban II rose to his feet to address the multitudes gathered before him at the Council of Clermont in 1095 A.D. His appeal was simple: let Western Christendom march to the aid of their brethren in the East. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most tremendous and romantic of Christian expeditions or the last of the barbarian invasions, they remain one of the most exciting and colorful adventure stories in history. The reasons for joining the Crusade varied widely; remittance from penance, a desire to see the Holy Places, or greed for the power and booty to be captured in the East. But the prize at the end of it all, be it spiritual or temporal, of the Holy City of Jerusalem. An army of mounted warriors. Traveling with peasants, merchants and artisans, faced a journey over hostile terrain, meeting with unforeseen antagonism, desert heat, and the constant struggle to feed and water their troops and horses. Their journey's spectacular culmination was the long siege of Jerusalem, at the end of which the Crusaders, by a brilliant tactical maneuver, broke down its defenses and poured into the city which erupted in a bloody massacre. Steven Runciman's"History of the Crusades" is justly acclaimed as the most complete and fascinating account of the historic journey to save the Holy Lands from the Infidel. This abridgement makes accessible to a wider readership one of the most compelling historical narratives. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. During the Roman era emerald was discovered in Germany near present-day Salzburg, and production continued through the Middle Ages before the deposit played out. Prior to the discoveries in Roman Germania, the ancient Mediterranean’s source for these precious gemstones was Egyptian emerald mines near the Red Sea. These were the recently rediscovered“Cleopatra’s Mines” near the Red Sea, described in ancient Egyptian written texts dated to the life of Pharaoh Sesostris III in the 19th century B.C. The Greeks worked these mines in the time of Alexander the Great and throughout the Ptolemaic(Hellenic/Macedonian) Dynasty. The last ruler of the Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt, Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, was often depicted and described wearing fabulous emeralds mined from those same famous ancient mines. Here’s a beautiful. Very nice quality, richly colored Colombian green emerald of intense, bright hue. Emeralds are nearly 100 times rarer than diamonds, and there are few opportunities to acquire such good quality natural emeralds at reasonable prices. The best specimens can bring over $40,000 a carat. Though the gemstone originated in Colombia, it was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewe

Includes 24 inch gold electroplated chain(or silverplated- your choice) Vital Statistics: Weight: 25 1/2 carats. Length: 21mm. Height: 17mm. Thickness: 15mm. DETAILS: Throughout the Orient jade was known as the"dream stone" Ancient populations believed jade would enable the wearer to access the spiritual world. And was perceived as a sacred substance. Jade was also regarded as a sacred substance. It was believed to afford the wearer against lightening strikes, would drive off beasts, and helped warriors in battle. It was also believed to be an effective fertility aid, and to provide the wearer with self-confidence. In Chinese mythology the Moon Hare made an elixir of immortality from crushed Jade. So of course jade was ground up and drunken as an“elixir of immortality” believed to preserve vitality and youth. The Chinese believe that the secret virtue of jade was absorbed into the body, and would preserve the body after death. Here's a darling little green jade statuette hand-carved into an exceptionally well-detailed little elephant. We picked these up in Bombay in the 1990’s from a wholesaler who had kept them in a warehouse for decades. The carving is difficult to date. As artisans have been producing little hand-carved jade statuettes for centuries, however reliable indications suggest that this was produced in the 1950’s or 1960’s. However the art form is dying out, and this is a beautiful piece of art possessing a very rich and handsome appearance. Identified as being carved from some of the world's finest jade deposits, this particular shade of jade is highly sought after, and can be quite costly. No two pieces of jade are identical, so you can be sure that this statuette is unique. The pendant comes mounted onto a very nice 24 inch, 14kt gold electroplated chain. If you prefer, we also
