Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The origins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. Dark green beryl is known as emerald. And tends to be infested with inclusions. Light blue-green beryl on the other hand, aquamarine, tends to be transparent, lightly colored, and more frequently found eye clean to flawless. What light blue-green is to aquamarine, light green is to"green beryl" Green beryl is aquamarine, except that whereas aquamarine light blue-green color comes from iron impurities, the light green of beryl comes from vanadium. Like aquamarine, green beryl is generally found in better qualities than emerald, which is generally heavily included and fractured. But did you ever hear of pink beryl? Pink beryl is known in Russia as pink emerald- which is an apt description as emerald is beryl- as the only difference between them is that pink beryl is colored by manganese impurities; whereas other varieties of beryl are colored blue to green by impurities of iron(aquamarine) chromium(emerald) and vanadium(green beryl) For those few Americans who have ever heard of pink beryl, they might know it better as"Morganite" so named for the gemstone collector and capitalist J. P. Morgan. Just when exactly pink beryl(or if you prefer. pink emerald" or"Morganite" was first discovered is a source of contention. This particular specimen came from Elba Island, Italy, sometime around 1880, and was subsequently hand cut in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Howeve

Description: This is a beautiful 1867 map of the Barbary Coast or northern Africa in antiquity by William Hughes. The map depicts the ancient empires of Mauritania. Carthage and Numidia or what is today the Barbary Coast. It covers from the Atlas Mountains on the western coast of modern day Morocco, east as far as modern day Tunisia. An inset map along the bottom border(Continuation of the African Coast from the Syrtis Minor to Egyot) covers from Tunisia eastward as far as Egypt. Another inset in the lower right quadrant features an enlarged plan of the Carthaginian Territory. The Carthaginian Empire was formed after Carthage(identified here) gained independence from the Phoenician colonies in 650 BC. Carthage became the center for trade the Carthaginian Empire dominated much of the region, until Numidia, the Kingdom to the west of Carthage, allied itself with Rome in 206 BC leading the Roman conquest of the region in 201 BC. By the end of the third Punic war, the city of Carthage was leveled by Rome, thus ending its independent existence. Carthage's great general Hannibal, nearly conquered Rome with his highly trained war elephants, before being turned back at the very brink of victory. Still further west, the Kingdom of Mauretania was established as the Roman Province of Mauretania Casariensis. This map was created by William Hughes, printed by J. Bien and engraved by G.E. Not cheap silver electroplate! These are two gorgeous. High quality solid sterling silver earrings. These are high-quality earrings made right here in the USA, crafted to last a lifetime. Measurements: Length: 15mm. Weight: 2.61 grams. DETAILS: Early in Rome’s history silver(and gold) came from Spain via the Phoenicians and their colony of Carthage. Partly motivated by a desire to control that trade. Rome engaged Carthage in three wars(the“Punic Wars” In fact father of the great Carthaginian General Hannibal was not only himself one of Carthage’s most famous generals, he was also a precious metals merchant. The Romans virtually deforested the entire country of Spain making charcoal to smelt silver and gold. When the silver in Spain began to play out, in 55BC Rome’s Julius Caesar invaded Britain, in part to acquire the rich silver deposits there. The Romans were the first to mass-produce coinage on a monumental scale, the first truly monetized society. Between 100 and 400AD the Romans produced billions of silver and bronze coins. At the height of the Empire. There were over 400 mints producing coinage throughout the empire. Silver was also fashioned into Greek-style jewelry. The chief centers of production were Alexandria, Antioch, and Rome, to which Greek craftsmen had migrated. In celebration of that heritage here is a pair of gorgeous, solid sterling silver designer earrings. I picked these up at a trade show recently as samples for a fraction of their retail value, and am passing the savings. These are very stylish, high-quality earrings produced in the USA from solid sterling silver(not cheap electroplated base metal) I’m not permitted to reveal the name of the fashion label these are intended to carry, but they’re exclusive, high-end earrings.
