Rare Indopersian Mail Coif Kulah Zirah. 16Th-17Th Century Comprising a central plate mounted with a plume holder. Both finely overlaid with gold koftgari. ... moreThe body of particularly small fine butted link mail in a diamond pattern alternating iron with brass. The bottom with four pointed falls. Butted link mail, is generally considered to post date riveted link mail based on its use in body armor. In that application, defense against thrusting attacks which riveted links provide, is essential. Attacks to the head and neck, however are generally slashing or hacking. The mail absorbs much of the energy through displacement and disperses more to the contact area. The more flexible the mail, the more energy is absorbed. This example maximizes protection with an extremely dense matrix of fine small links. The decoration suggests that it was made for a warrior of noble birth.

This is a primitive scrimshaw horn that I purchased 30 years ago at an estate sale of Victorian Scottish military items(sporrans. Sgeans, paintings, prints, ... moreand a broadsword) of the very highest quality. The horn commemorates the 72nd(Duke of Albany's) Highland Regiment. I would date it between ca 1850 and obviously earlier than 1881. At which date the 72nd was reorganized into the First Battalion of the 78th(Seaforth) Highlanders. Its Victorian date of origin is additionally made clear since"God Save the Queen" and"VR" are among the engraved images. It celebrates the regimental service at India. Minden, Seringapatam, and"Giberalter" sic) In addition to various military motifs having to do with Victory or Death. A key fesswise above a crenelated tower, what appears to be the Prince of Wales' ostrich feathers, and crossed British flags, is a spirited representation of a kilted bagpiper wearing a highland bonnet, dirk, broadsword, and military kilt hose with ribbon flashes. Perhaps it was intended to be made into a powder horn. Or it may have served as a drinking cup. The two metal hooks were already attached when I purchased it. Although there are many examples of British soldiers' engraved horns from the French and Indian war period. This is the only primitive scrimshawed horn I have seen that commemorates the service of a Scottish regiment in India. Feel free to email if you have anything to add about this item, which I consider to be one of a kind. We will sell to bidders from the U.S. and U.K. with excellent feedback. Thank you for your interest.

Psalm 44. Antique 17th century hand calligraphy on vellum, tab mounted and framed. The Psalm of Communal Lament" We are very please to be able to ... moreoffer for your consideration this professionally tab mounted and framed 17th Century vellum of Psalm 44 The calligraphy on this vellum is hand penned. Our expert tells us it was most likely taken from a privately owned, and or, commissioned book of Psalms. We believe this because it is without illumination, and markings for musical notations. It is beautifully mounted on a fabric back board with corner tab mounts. The vellum is scribed in Latin, on both sides, or recto inverso. Shadows of the letters on the reverse side can be faintly seen through the text of the front. From the look of the font style, the peculiar punctuation, and the vellum used, our expert dates it to the 17th century. The passage is a portion of Psalm 44, or the Psalm of Communal Lament. According to our Latin translator it is verses 9 through 13. In these verses, the Psalmist laments that God has been slow to act, and has a responsibility to save these people from their enemies. The frame measures 23 1/8 inches wide. By 30 1/2 inches tall, by 1 5/8 inches deep. The frame is nice and deep, providing adequate space to accommodate the ripples in the vellum. The frame is finished in a dark brown stain, and is distressed. The back is covered in heavy brown paper with sealed edges. This piece weighs approximately 8 pounds. Condition- This framed antique framed vellum is in wonderful condition. There are no visible flaws that we can see. If you are a collector of religious antiquities this would be a wonderful piece to add to your collection. Check out the HUGE selection of items in our eBay store. A SPANISH INLAID WALNUT CASKET. IN THE MUDÉJAR STYLE 16TH/17TH CENTURY This rare marquetry chest offers a striking example of how the Hispanic decorative arts often combine artistic influences from around the world into compositions of stunning originality. In the present example. Mudejar(Hispano Islamic) techniques and design combine with both Renaissance and Baroque elements in the compartmentalization of the decoration and the patterns of the inlaid ivory. Mudejar objects often have a network of white accents in bone, which function both as parts of the decorative motifs and as an abstract, often geometrical pattern in their own right. Height: 15. The inlay is often made up of polygonal tessarae of bone. Ivory and woods of contrasting color arranged in geometrical patterns. A closely related example is a 16th century chest attributed to Barcelona in the collection of the Hispanic Society of America. New York. In both examples the inlaid geometrical designs are related to the cellulated patterns on the 15th century Mudéjar carpets. Provenance: Ex collection Charlotte Albright( Heir of John J Albright. 17th/18th Century Oak Coffer with Inlaid Top. Rare. About as Rustic as Possible!
Description Antique Oak Coffer. Two dates here, the lower section is very early probably about c1670, the lid is a bit later, probably c1720. This is such an amazing piece. It's the most rustic thing I have ever owned, the timbers look ancient, they are grizzled and worn, rough cut in places(the back looks like it was roughly hacked off a tree) and just looks wonderful, if only it cold talk, it must have seen so much interesting history in it's 340 odd years! The top is a little later. And very unusually has satinwood and ebony triangular inlays, this is very very rare, these things are always just plain oak or some light carving(like this one has on the front) but very rarely do they have inlays. The inlays are fairly provincial looking and definately hand applied and cut, they again are just great to behold! If you love it. Rare Antique Turkish Ottoman Sword Kilij with 17th century Muslim Blade Wootz
Rare Antique Turkish Ottoman Sword Kilij with 17th century Blade Damascus Steel Search Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Rare Antique Turkish Ottoman sword Kilij with 17th century blade and 18th century solid silver mounts. DETAILS: A rare 17th century. Or earlier, massive and broad curved single edged Turkish blade of kilij form, cut on each side with a long shallow fuller and yelmen made of Damascus steel Wootz. A hilt comprised of a grip with Rhinoceros horn grip-scales, rising to a bulbous pommel in a characteristic Turkish Ottoman style, with a hole for the suspension tassel, bounded by pairs of silver washers, and enclosed by fluted silver straps, a silver crossguard with bud quillons. A leather-bound wooden scabbard stitched with spiral wire, and mounted with a large silver locket, a chape embossed and engraved ... moreon both sides with linear frame and foliage, and two bands with loops for suspension. One of the bands is stamped with Imperial Ottoman silver hallmarks tughra(probable of the Mahmud I(Sultan of the Ottoman Empire 1730 to 1754) but worn out, so it is uncertain) and a small square assay mark. This is a very rare early Turkish Ottoman blade. Similar blades are in the collection of the Top Kapi Saray Museum, and are dated to the 15th-17th century. In the 18th century most of the 15th-17th century old Turkish blades were remounted to the new fashion of mounting, with the Pistol shape hilt, so even in Turkish museums most of the ottoman swords have later mountings. This sword certainly has been remounted, due to the reinforcing metal zigzag band mounted on the ricasso of the blade under the crossguard. Examples of almost identical ottoman blades dated from the 15th to 17th century(with 18th century mountings) can be seen in the Topkapi Sarayi Museum and the Askeri Museum in Istanbul Turkey. The other collections such as the Kilij with the early 16th century blade dated to 1517 A.D. in the Musee de l’Armee Paris published in the book Les Armes Blanches Du Monde Islamique. By Ala

17th. century Carved Oak Newel Post Statue
Here is an intriguing early carved figure whose identity is somewhat of a mystery. A bearded man who bears a coat of arms on his chest and other symbols carved onto his front. Appearing to be from the 17th. century and carved from English oak. Our guess as to it's purpose is that it once graced the newel post to a great Elizabethan or Jacobean staircase. The carved armorial featuring a chevron design to the left and a tower to the right undoubtedly belonged to the family of the house. Below this are carved three letters A L V, the meaning of which is now obscure. The front of his legs are carved with a trailing trellis design, while below his feet are carved with a primitive charm into the base. The mysterious figure stands approx. 12 1/2 inches high, with a base 4 1/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches. This curiosity will conjure up different meanings ... moreto different people, but makes a most unusual decoration that can be incorporated into an interesting room. An anonymous letter: Curiosissimi Costumi de'Sig.i Ambasciatori Moscoviti, che ora si trovano in Livorno per passare all'Ambasciata di Venezia. According to the historians who worked with two other known copies of the letter(see below: Attribution of"Relatione d'Alcuni Costumi" it was written by a first-hand witness of the embassy, somehow involved with it, most likely between the 19th and 23rd of December, 1656. The written dialect of the letter's language indicates that the author was a common person from Livorno, possibly of Sicilian origin. The letter vividly describes the Muscovite diplomatic delegation, staying in Livorno on its way to Venice in the winter of 1656. It was an official embassy to the Doge of Venice from the Russian Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich(1629-1676) sent in 1656-57 and headed by the Pereyaslavl governor Ivan Ivanovich Chemodanov(before 1618- after 1657) and Deacon A. He and his courtiers wanted newspapers to read, yet feared to touch"The Intelligencer" or"The News, which, coming from London, might be infected. Therefore Leonard Litchfeld, the university printer, was authorized and ordered to bring out a local paper. On Tuesday, November 14, 1665, the first number of"The Oxford Gazette" appeared, and it continued afterwards through eleven weeks on Thursdays and Mondays. It was meagre enough, but, though comprised in only two double-columned pages of folio, each number contained nearly as much matter as one of Roger L'Estrange's papers, and it soon became a formidable rival to those papers, especially as Thomas Newcombe, the old printer of the Commonwealth organs, was allowed to reproduce its sheets in London"for the use of some members and gentlemen who desired them. The plague was soon over and King Charles went back to Whitehall. But he was pleased with the Oxford effort and it was soon succeeded by"The London Gazette, which made its first appearance, labelled as No. 24, on February 5, 1666, and which has been kept alive, altering its

17th-18th Century Belgium Style Lace Mixed Technique Lace-Tape/Bobbin/Tambour
Beautiful antique 17th to 18th century curtain panel comprised of netting and lace. I believe this panel to be made of mixed technique laces. Looks like netting. Tape lace, needlepoint, some form of tatting, tambour?bobbin lace and perhaps none of the above but something I don't recognize. Please view photos, perhaps you can identify. This panel measures approximately 74" long by 36-1/2" wide. Seems to be wider at bottom than top. Top only measured 34" wide. Could be the netting just needs stretching. Rod pocket has been cut off leaving a raw edge at top. New one can be resewn should you choose. There are a couple of tassles at bottom. One of the tassles has some yellowing, guess I missed that when washing. I found one small pin hole near top of panel(there may be more that I did not see) and one dark spot as show in photo#7. ... moreThis curtain panel is very old and may have other flaws. There may be other small holes and/or spots that I did not see. I think it's in decent condition for it's age but I want you to know it does have flaws. I did gently soak and launder by hand but it does need more attention. My hands just weren't big enough to squeeze out wash or rinse water properly. To me, this lace is amazing! The high contrast photos were taken in front of a window which is why they look so different than the pics taken on the bed. All questions are welcome and invited. I want you to know exactly what you are bidding on. Please examine pictures, you may see something I didn't notice. You are purchasing this panel in"as is" condition. Postage is way too expensive to be shipping back and forth. If in doubt about anything, please email me. I gladly combine shipping! Whatever will fit in one carton or envelope. Will ship according to total weight of contents. PAYMENT DUE WITHIN 3 DAYS AFTER PURCHASE. All questions are welcome and invited. It is selling AS IS at No Reserve. This appears to be an early, possibly 17th or early 18th Century. Ottoman Period, Silk Embroidery on fine cotton. Notice the top two face a different direction, then repeated vertically down the panel. Basically the same design, but done in some different color combinations. All the edges were once ornately decorated with needlework and Silk trim edging. Now only remnants remain. From research. This piece is possibly, from the Greek Islands, Northern Sporades Region, and very similar to the traditional Greek Island Folk Embroidery motifs found on other pieces on line from Skyros, and this era. Due to strong regional patterns and techniques during this period, I hope a collector will be be able to identify it's place of origin, If I am incorrect. HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE! Old Antique Composite Violin,17th to 20th Century, For Restoration Worth a L@@K!
Offered is an antique 4/4 violin. I purchased this violin 10 years ago on eBay. The violin was purchased with 90% of it covered in very thick paint. The exception being the top of the fingerboard and the back of the neck(note: some paint found on edges of fingerboard) I have removed 85% of the paint fom the top(Note: photo#1 is a representation of what the center bout would appear with all of the paint removed) ~95% of the paint from the back, and The following are 3'mysteries' which I have discovered: 1. The Czech Strad label may be appropriate for the back. Certainly not for the top and ribs, and neck/scroll. The top's arching is very high compare to any Stradivari violins I know of, and the f hole notches are uncharacteristically large for any Strad. 2. There are eight wood wafers inlaid into the top just below the fingerboard. ... moreAfter much investigation I think this represents the Ptolemaic Universe* I.e. the Universe consists of 8 bodies and the'fixed stars' with the earth in the center: a Geocentric model. This view was the accepted'norm' until the 17th century. If my thoughtful conclusion is correct, the top, and probably the ribs are from the 1500s. This dating is consistent with the extreme wear the top has seen. 3. The paint. Which hid the 8 inlaid wafers, the wear to the top, and the newer condition of the back, may have been applied to smuggle this violin out of Europe.during the 1930s? I know this is speculation, however possible. Ptolemaic system Ptolemy believed that Earth was at the center of the universe and that the Sun and planets orbited Earth(with the planets also moving in smaller circles called epicycles) In this system. The centers of Mercury's and Venus's epicycles always lie on the line shown in the diagram between the Earth and the Sun.
