They are embossed in high relief with figures of classical Gods. Putti and dolphins based on the designs of Etienne Delaune(1519-83) the French goldsmith responsible for the finest decorative designs for French armor of the period, in particular embossed parade shields. The central motif is of Venus, Mars, and Cupid. The remaining armor include a half armor(John Higgins Woodman Armory Museum, Worcester Mass. JWHA 2549) comprising breastplate, back, articulated tassets, pauldrons and full arms. The breastplate of that armor has been modified in the early 17th century by removing approximately the bottom third to conform to then current fashion. A pair of gauntlets from one of the armors belonging to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was loaned for display with that armor. A helmet of one of the armors is in the collection of the Museo Stibbert, Florence. This cuirass is unaltered as made and the only portion in private hands. The deep peascod form of this breastplate, a reflection of clothing fashion of the period, can be compared to a breastplate in the Royal Armories, Leeds, III.1218. A breastplate of similar form is worn by King Henry III of France in a portrait by Francois Cloute. The decoration can be compared to the incomplete armor in the National Army Museum, Paris illustrated in the catalog, p. 53/4 and, Bruno Thomas Die Munchner Harnischvorziechnungen mit Rankendekor des Etienne Delaune. I believe this piece of early antique lace with cool to the touch linen threads is Punto Tirato. Early Drawn Work Laces of this type are extremely rare. Are generally held in museums and private collections. This lace would date to the 17th century and earlier. And is an example of one of the earliest forms of lace making. It came out of Maine. Antique Shinto 17th Century Japanese Sword Samurai Wakizashi Katana in Koshirae
Authentic antique Shinto period Japanese Wakizashi sword in koshirae. The 17th century blade has a nicely curved slender shape. Sharp good old japanese polish with very minor light residue, one very tiny and thin battle nick and one area of lose layer on the surface(as shown on picture) apart from it a good strong long wakizashi blade with healthy slightly bumpy hamon temperline and visible good grain patter. The tip is healthy and not reshaped, nice sharp looking with nice strong high boshi. The tang is unaltered. Unshortened in original state with nice patination, it is signed: 神田住兼常 Kanda Ju Kanetsune He worked in the second half of the 17th century in Musashi province. He is wazamono smith, his father was 2nd generation Kaneshige. The blade is housed in Edo koshirae. A very beautiful Chinese hand painted Nanking plate. Circa 1700 I believe. It measures 22.5 cm's in width. Which is a little under 9 inches. It weighs approximately 400 grams. The condition is fairly good for its age. There is a chip to its reverse edge with a fine hairline from it. There are two other very fine lines that are so slight they do not show up in a photograph, they look more like crazing lines than cracks, very hard to see unless you look closely& mentioned for complete accuracy, however minor. The thickly cast drop-shaped body with flattened sides. Rising from a conical foot with cusped edge, has an elegant design of a raised double tear drop medallion on each side of the body. The two shoulders have finals on the ends. The container is in two pieces with the long tapering decorated spout. This is a nice rare 17th century candlestick. It is a glazed earthenware bowl with a candlestick in the center. This was filled with water so that fleas would be attracted to it and fall in the water and drown. The bowl was found in pieces and restored. It measures 3 3/4" tall by 8" wide. The blade geometry as well as the manner in which the brass fittings are decorated are consistent with the age mentioned above. The brass fittings are hand engraved not cast the shape of the horn grip suggests this might be English. A very rare and interesting very early 18th Century silk sampler on natural linen. Worked in traditional band format with the alphabet worked in a variety of styles or stitches. Interestingly the first few letters A to E are all worked in both upper and lower case letters. The A in all cases on this sampler worked with a flat top.After 3 sets we then have the sewers details ELIZABETH FENNER WAS BORN JANUARY THE 1 16997. Followed by the date 1716 when she completed her sampler. We then have more letters of the alphabet AaBCD followed by pairs of initials AF EF AF IF EF& TF. These are usually her parents followed by grand parents initials although could also be brother and sisters. At the very bottom a uncompleted band of spot motifs and flame work patterns.
