We have since found out through an online appraisal company that ... moreis is an Antique Drop Front Writing Desk" from around 1900-1915. But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. It has been refinished in a medium to satin sheen gloss dark reddish-brown mahogany stain. This desk has hand-cut dovetails across the top, like the early construction desks do, a breadboard writing surface that opens up to reveal two slide supports and a gorgeous interior with curved dovetail drawers, a raised beveled center door and center column drawers. It even has a key. The base has curved front drawers with wooden knobs, all dovetail, and the pillar drawers across the top, which means there are two smaller drawers across the base and three drawers in the bottom. Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. Linens, books, etc. A March 31, 1991 New York Times story reported- Members of an 18th-century family in Windham, Ebenezer Devotion, a judge of the county court; his wife, Eunice; his parents; his four children, and other relatives, are the subjects of an exhibition at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street in New London. Many family artifacts have been preserved by the Devotions' descendants still living in Windham. Many of the items ... morewere donated to historical societies and museums, and they have been gathered together for this display by Lance Mayer and Gay Myers, Lyman Allyn's conservators. The family portraits in the exhibition were the first important commission for a 20-year-old painter named Winthrop Chandler. Among them is one of Ebenezer's father, a minister and member of the state legislature. The family had a distinguished history. Ebenezer's sister married Samuel Huntington, who became Governor of Connecticut. Ebenezer himself was a member of the Sons of Liberty. He made his fortune as a merchant, trading in rum, molasses, sugar, and food for the American Army during the Revolutionary War. The exhibition contains his ledgers, which detail his sales and purchases. The personal possessions- including beds, desks, chairs, tables, silver, clothing and portraits- indicate the family's high status in the community. Letters exchanged among Ebenezer's children as they went off to pursue careers and marriages provide intimate glimpses into their relationships. For auction. An old Quimper Breton wooden step-back china cupboard for doll house collectors. It's constructed and decorated with all the folk art details one would expect of this French style of furniture. The two doors open with the turn of the knob to reveal two inner shelves. The three open shelves on top have a turned wood spindle design to hold plates upright. And even the top of the cupboard is decorated. The piece measures 9 7/8" tall x 6 1/8" wide x 3 1/8" deep. Stunning example of a French cast solid bronze corner furniture embellishment in the style of Louis XV. In excellent condition with character patina but would look splendid cleaned and restored to it's former gleaming beauty. The centre recessed oval panel shows a bow and a sheaf of arrows. This is topped with the classic Louis bow with the bow ends extending to form the curved arms which are decorated with flowers. This is a beautiful piece of antique French decorative art. There is a threaded bolt hole on the back with which it was presumably attached to the top of the frontal leg of a piece of furniture. Matching set of table legs.Handmade from what looks like the 1800's or before.Possibly the oldest legs listed on ebay at this time.Very nice condition for their age,some wear and minor cracks.Very solid though and very good looking.Very unusual jointery with a square hole going thru one side and a round hole thru the other with a hole thru the top.Looks like some kind of shim is in two of the square holes and the other two used to have the same kind of shim.Each leg is about 34 inches long. 4 Antique Copper Japanese Tansu Sliding Door Handles Pulls / Furniture Hardware
These are four antique sliding door pulls. They were originally for a Japanese sliding door(Fusuma) but could be used in any other sliders for a home or furniture. They are very patina-ted copper. This is how we got them and have not attempted to clean them. With a soft brass brush or a toothbrush some of the dirt could be taken off leaving the patina only. Or they could stay as is. It took a lot of years for them to acquire that kind of character. We are estimating they are from the early 1900's but they could be older. They are very solid. Great quality, two pulls are off the lower drawer, I believe easily found here on Ebay. 25 inches tall, dark oak, beautiful wood grain, 15 3/4 inches wide, 7 inches front to back. A History of Italian Furniture from the Fourteenth to the Early Nineteenth Centuries” By William M. Odom. Published in New York by The Archive Press in 1966. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A facsimile reissue of the 1918 limited edition. A large, well-illustrated classic on Italian furniture of the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classical Revival and Empire periods. Odom published his work when interest in and appreciation for the arts and crafts of the Italian Renaissance was peaking in America and England, and it followed several other noted English language studies of Italian woodwork, interiors, architecture and carving. In many Renaissance-era craft centers, but especially in Italy, the same workers who created the beautifully-carved church and house interior woodwork and sculptures also made the furniture, ... moreso the subjects were inextricably linked. Odom, however, was the first English-language writer to focus on furniture, and he drew his examples mainly from American, Italian, and some English, collections, both public and private. Many examples were drawn from the stock of high-end New York dealers such as Bardini and Volpi, and others came from the N metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria& Albert. The rest were in private hands; some of those examples have since migrated to museums, others have changed location or disappeared from public view entirely. Indeed, the second volume which begins after the Renaissance and features Baroque and Classical pieces, is drawn almost exclusively from private collections, as most connoisseurs of the period, Odom included, viewed these styles as debased and vulgar, and unworthy of museum collections. Button Furniture This neat old advertising plaque is from back in the days when the local furniture store also sold caskets and did the embalming downstairs. Different times. It's a metal plaque. About 1/16" thick, very slightly bent, and scratched as you can see. I don't know if this was inset into a front door, or if they were cheap enough to affix to the coffins and furniture. The letters were actually hand engraved(you can see the cut marks from the graving tools) and then the recess was filled with a black enamel. It measures 2 3/4" x 3 3/4" I've google-searched the man and he was prominent in Williams history. The item being auctioned is the one pictured.
