Usually on back but sometimes on the edges. They may also have tiny holes beginning to form where the fold lines meet. Fine original antique color printed map from the early part of the 20th century. Printed on quality heavy paper stock which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. A scarce and beautifully printed oversize map issued in Italy just prior to the Second World War. With a staggering level of detail. Similar to Stieler maps but in a much larger format. Literally thousands of places names are to be found. In VG to Fine or better condition. Clean and well preserved, a lovely example of a beautiful large map well worthy of framing for display[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains ... morevisually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting and quite uncommon antique map. Any minor defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. Sheet measures c. 11 7/8" H x 19 1/4" W. Engraved area measures c. 10 3/4" H x 15 5/8" W. Folio. With original fold-line as issued. 32069] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. On its face it has a listing of the Railroads in existence at the time. See scan. A search of worldcat.org which lists all holdings in the worlds libraries. Museums, historical societies and even a few map dealers shows that no other copy of this atlas exists anywhere. We have searched other sites and come up with zero. This appears to have been the only copy that survived. Paper drives during World War II, took many library and reference works. A narrow mounting strip is glued to the blank back of the map along the fold line through the center of the map. Printed on the map is"Copyright 1904 by The Americana Company. In 1787, the Spanish crown named Fabregat director of engraving at the Royal Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. Here Fabreget instituted the highest standards for printing and engraving, introducing the most advanced techniques from Europe. The recognition of engraving as an art and royal patronage led to unprecedented expansion of the arts outside of Madrid. Among those participating in this flourishing era of engraving was Rafael Jimeno y Planés(1759-1825) the Valencia artist who created the exquisite vignettes at the lower section of this map. Jimeno y Planés studied in Rome, Madrid, and Mexico(Academy of San Carlos) In 1798 he became director ... moreof painting at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico, and subsequently, director general. Texas is treated as a Republic(hence the reference in the title to Texas AND The United States) Albert Gilliam's map traces his travels through the region. From San Francisco to Southern California, across the Colorado River to the mining regions of Sonora, etc. in 1843 and 1844. Corning prior to Fremont and the California Gold Rush, his proposal for a straight line pair of railroad lines fron San Francisco to Napoleon(at the confluence of the Mississippi River and the Arkansas River) ... moreand a second line to New Orleans, was both forward thinking and completely devoid of geographical understanding of the several largely unexplored mountain ranges that were seamlessly crossed by Gilliam's ambitious depiction. The map shows Bents Fort(Colorado) and the Arkansas River to the north. The Red River to the east, and the Rio del Norte on the west side(now called the Rio Grande) Santa Fe is marked in the lower left and Taos in the middle. Thus Report focused on the Gold Rush in California but also included other events in the Territory of New Mexico and Baja California. Both Beall and Aubrey were interesting personages and each played a significant role in Southwest History. Aubrey[Actually François Xavier Aubry] A trader, was constantly seeking quicker ways to move good across the plains and to California, He had several run-ins with Indians over the years. But he met his end in a bar room fight in Albuquerque. Beall spent much of his career on the frontier and specifically in the New Mexico Military Department.
