Sen. Ex. Doc. No. 11, 31st Congress, 1st sess. 1850) Attached is a 13 page report. See pics. l Large Map measures 28" x 21" Condition is good with some toning and splitting at some corner folds. Folded as issued. This is NOT a copy or reproduction. This is an original map printed in 1955 and is guaranteed 100% authentic. After the fall of Mexico City to General Winfield Scott in September 1847. A number of Topographical Engineers remained in the region to prepare battle plans for reports of the campaign. Officers Martin Smith and Edmund Hardcastle were assigned to the valley of Mexico, which they reconnoitered following Scott’s victory. They produced the remarkable map offered here and its report containing each man’s account of the events surrounding the making of the map. About their methodologies, Traas writes: They accomplished their survey by triangulation and hand compasses, and the cartography accurately depicted the region as it appeared in 1848. Hardcastle also measured the distance between Mexico City and Vera Cruz by attaching an odometer to a wagon wheel. After Turnbull prepared campaign maps to accompany battle reports, the two topogs incorporated his survey of the area south of the city into their map of the region. Congress later published the report and map. The map shows the valley of Mexico from the Aztec city of Zumpango in the north to just south of Mexico City. Topographical features. Amazing vintage 1040's era rainbow Mexican Saltillo serape blanket. Tightly woven wool with all the colors of the rainbow. Mexico flag colors and a beautiful diamond center design. Fringe is cream colored silk with hand tied ends. Measures 72" in length without fringe, 84" total length with fringe x 33 1/4" wide. Blanket was held up to sunlight and there are no holes and no areas where the sun comes thru. Blanket shows no wear or fading. None of the fringe is missing. Frayed or cut off. A few of the fringe ties look like some tea or coffee was spilled on it many years ago. Again very faint and only mentioned for accuracy of description. Wonderful bright colorful serape! Up for auction is an original antique metal keychain fob and key from the Hacienda Vista Hermosa. Not sure the age of this item but appears very old. It is a large key and has the crest logo stamped on the fob. Name of the hotel is stamped on the steel key and the room number 129 is also stamped on both items. Key measures approx. 8 1/4 inches long. Overall condition is very nice. Key has an old crack on one of the welds and has been like this for years. Pretty sure this hotel is located in Tequesquitengo. Not sure but feels and looks like wool. Well used. Has a little looseness in a very small area of the fringe but no lose, tears or holes, some pilling and looks to have been washed? not sure, it has a little shrinkage in some of the stripes, but not bad at all. Very uncommon mid 19th century color lithographed map. Nicely detailed. With comparative topographical profiles along the bottom detailing the region's mountains, as well as maps of Haiti and the Dominican Republic and part of Mexico at the bottom. Map colored to emphasize land mass topography. Beautifully printed. In good+. Mostly clean condition. Map uniformly toned, with some gentle and hardly noticeable scattered spotting. Some corners bent. None of which are visually offensive. Otherwise map remains clean and well-preserved overall. A fine map for display. Sheet measures c. 12" W x 9 1/4" H.
