Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. The map traces the Atlantic Coast from well north of Tampico to well southeast of Veracruz and extends inland to include Mexico City. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest ... morepicture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. USS Texas Sepia. Unused RPPC postal card, 3 3/8" x 5 3/8" This real photo postcard is from a collection I found in Scotland of RPPC's with photos taken by a sailor on the USS Texas(BB-35) Many(though not all) of the photos have the name"Frank Merritt" or"F. Merritt" written on back. And a few say" Photo By Denson. Denson is Oscar Davis Denson. Musician 2nd Class, who served on the Texas between 1916-1920. And Frank Merritt served on the Texas during WWI, as this entry is in the memorial registry at pacifichistoricparks.org: Merritt, Frank, U.S. Navy, USS Texas BB-35, WWI" According to wikipedia. The Texas served in Mexico(Tampico and Veracruz) and Cuba(Nipe Bay) before entering World War I in 1917 and spending most of 1918 in Scotland. There are several other RPPC's of the USS Texas labeled"Photo ... moreby Denson" which are in various archives and references can be found on the web. His photos of the USS Texas football team and an opposing baseball team are referenced online. As well as photos he took of other ships, including the USS Finland as King George visited it in Liverpool. This real photo postcard was found with the USS Texas Scottish photos. It is on the same exact AZO paper with the same color tones. So most likely this is a photo taken either by Denson or Merritt while the Texas was in Mexico or Cuba. And kept with Merritt's Scottish photos. Or even possibly not printed until 1918 with the Scottish photos. This photo shows a scene in a small Mexican village(or possibly Cuban. Local men and children and a huge ox-driven cart are visible. The stampbox has"AZO" 2 triangles up. 2 triangles down) which according to the photoguide at cycleback.com places this card definitively between 1918 and 1930. click on the image to enlarge it and zoom. 1878 VERACRUZ Mexico HACIENDA de TUXPANGO Good For 10 Token SUGARCANE PLANTATION This is a quite presentable and fairly old Hacienda Token from the Hacienda De Tuxpango. A Sugar Cane producer. It was located near the city of Ixtaczoquitlan, please see map below, in the State of Veracruz, Mexico. According to the Rulau Catalog cited below. Since they were reported by Fonrobert, these were struck before 1878. He also shows two distinct varieties of this token with slightly different Eagles, this is the second, scarcer variety. These tokens are unusual in that they are not fully round. They are struck on a 25 sided polygonal flan.
