The book was written by Richard Walter. Chaplin aboard Ansons flagship, Centurion. In his famous voyage(1740–44) around the world. Anson, in spite of shipwrecks and scurvy, inflicted great damage on Spanish shipping and returned to England with a rich prize. He was raised to the peerage after his popular naval victory(1747) off Cape Finisterre. Appointed then as first lord of the admiralty, he assisted William Pitt, Lord Chatham, in reorganizing naval administration. British navigators in the 1700`s were often interested in more than increasing the glory of God& Country. In September 1740 Commodore Anson set off across the Atlantic with six poorly manned. Ill-equipped vessels to capture Spanish treasure ships in the Pacific. He lost three ships rounding Cape Horn but went on to raid Spanish mining settlements on the coast of Chili. The map is about 49" wide, It is around 36" long( I did not measure when I had the map open so this is an educated guess and may be off several inches, due to the condition of the map I do not intend to open it again. Up for auction is an old antique map of the Eastern Hemisphere showing Asia. Europe, Africa, and Australia. Below the map it says, Published by Samuel Walker, Boston. I am not exactly sure what year this map was printed, but I believe this map is from the mid 1800's. The overall condition is fair with good color, but there are some yellowish brown spots that you can see in the pictures. The spots are probably from age, but perhaps it took on some moisture at some point over the years. The paper though is great with a nice cream color and no tears, creases, or other defects to mention. The size of the entire paper is 10.5" x 8.5" and the diameter of the map is 7.25" This map is guaranteed to be an original and not a reproduction. NICE VINTAGE Wood ITALIAN Made OLD WORLD Desk GLOBE 10" Tall; Antique Map
Up for grabs is this unique vintage wood Italian made Old World Globe. This piece stands 10 1/2" tall from bottom to top. And is 6 1/2" wide. Globe is says"Made In Italy" on the bottom. Pretty cool piece even if you can't read Italian. I can't be totally sure what the globe itself is made from. There are also illustrations of sea monsters and ships throughout the oceans and seas. Globe spins on its axis with ease. Very minor wear to be found on the base where there is a couple tiny bumps on one side of the base. You can probably see them if you zoom in on a couple of the pictures. It's not really that noticeable when looking at the piece in its normal position, and is in overall great shape! The metal is a brass color that has a great patina to it. The knob on top of the bucket winds up for the music box portion. When the lid is lifted the music starts playing from the bucket. There are no makers marks that i see on this bucket. I am not sure of the exact age of this item.
