And the northwest border with Canada and the U.S. has been left undefined due to the unsettled claims in that region. The extent of immigration and developed territories is confined to east of the Mississippi. The map names all the known tribes and where they are located with a color key at left that also informs us that the Catawba. Uchee and Natchez Indians are extinct. A key shows the location of annual Friends meetings and a table at the right notes the number of tribal members of each tribe and also how many had. At that point, been moved from their homelands. It measures about 14 1/2 by 22 inches(about 36 by 56cm. and is in Fine condition. It contains a huge amount of detail including latitude and longitude, topographical features, counties, cities and villages, routes of old railways and more. Elevations and drainages are shown using hachures, as was typical in 19th Century cartography. There are even several"ghost towns" on this map, no longer in existence today. This is a guaranteed genuine antique map! Ideal for genealogy or other historical research. Garretson& Co. fl. c. 1880- 1900) were prominent cartographic publishers active in the later part of the 19th century. Bradley acquired Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior's atlas plates in the late 1880s which he used to publish his own version of Mitchell's atlas. The firm had offices both in Philadelphia, at 66 North Fourth Street, and in Brantford, Ontario. Samuel Augustus Mitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school ... moretexts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps. Many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior, entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s when most of the copyrights were again sold and the Mitchell firm closed its doors for the final time.
