Struck for the supporters of Agustin de Iturbide. The First Mexican Empire lasted eighteen months, from September 28, 1821 to March 19, 1823 and had one emperor, Agustin de Iturbide. Its origins can be traced to Napoleon I of France's conquest of Spain in 1808 and his installation of Joseph Bonaparte as King of Spain. These events loosened Spain's hold on her American colonies, and the movement for Mexican independence grew stronger. The Mexican War of Indepenedence began in 1810 and continued until 1821, when rebel troops entered Mexico City after the treaty of Cordoba was signed, whereby Spain's representative, Juan O'Donoju, recognized Mexico's independence. In that year, General Agustin de Iturbide, a Mexican-born criollo(locally born people of pure or mostly Spanish ancestry) former royalist who had switched his allegiance to the insurgents in the final phases of the war, was elected head of a provisional junta government and of a regency that held the imperial power that the Spanish crown once had. On the night of May 18. 1822, a mass demonstration led by the Regiment of Celaya, which Iturbide had commanded during the war, marched through the streets and demanded that their commander-in-chief accept the throne. The next day the Sovereign Congress named him emperor, and on May 21 issued a decree officially confirming this appointment, which was officially a temporary measure until a European monarch could be found to rule Mexico. The Pope was not there, but there was a tremendous crowd. Soldier Field in Chicago was brand new, and hosted the Opening Mass for an estimated 500,000 of the faithful. Closing Mass at Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary had nearly a million worshipers. This medal came to me from the New York City area, and has obviously seen some wear, possibly by a Catholic priest. It was part of the estate of a man who had once been a priest. There can't be too many of these around, and few could have the resonance of this one. Please see my other items for more coins. This is not 238 years old as you read on some may think. This is just as you see it but I do believe it came through an Army base in Texas. This auction includes the original box. One ribbon covered bar, one enamel metal bar, the actual ribbon medal! The Army Achievement Medal was established in 1981 and is awarded for outstanding achievement or meritorious service. In 1961. The Navy Department established a medal to recognize individual, meritorious achievements that were not commensurate with the criteria of the Navy Commendation medal. In 1981, the Army(and Air Force) followed suit with their own achievement medals. The design of the Army Achievement medal obverse is somewhat generic as it depicts the official U.S. Army seal along with the year the Continental Army was established(1775) The reverse of pendant simply states. It belonged to a gentlemen that serviced 3 years on active duty in WWII for the 12th Army Air Force. As you can see this comes with jacket. Pants, 2 shirts, gloves, 2 ties, riding pants, patches, ribbons, and medal. The 12th Army Air Force(AAF) was constituted and activated on August 20. 1942. The 12th AAF was part of the invasion Algeria and French Morocco in North Africa in Nov. 1942. They then operated in the Mediterranean theater until the end of the war. This is an older Navy medal and ribbon that we have had for many years. I do not know the year it was presented. The front of the medal reads"UNITED STATES NAVAL RESERVE Meritorious Service" There is nothing on the back. The back of the pin itself has a G-I with a V in a circle. The medal measures 1 3/8" in diameter. The attached ribbon is 1.25" long and 1 3/8" wide. The ribbon is 1 3/8" wide and not quite 1/2" tall. On the back of the ribbon pin is S-26-GI. AUSTRIA-HUNGARY WW I FJ Bravery Medal Set. Replacement Triangular Ribbons, Ribbon Bars Veteran Bravery Medal Badge, The Austrian Large Silver. Small Silver and Bronze Bravery Medals 1914-191 Kaiser Joseph II first founded a Golden and Silver commemorative medal on the 19th of July 1789 for Non Commissioned Officers and Private Soldiers who had distinguished themselves before the enemy. Since 1809 this was known as the Bravery Medal or Tapferkeitsmedaille. On the 19th August 1848 Kaiser Ferdinand divided the Silver Bravery Medal into two classes- a First and a Second Class. The 2nd Class Medal being a smaller version with a diameter of 31mm. On the 14th February 1915 Kaiser Franz Joseph introduced the Bronze Medal which was the same size as the 2nd Class Silver. Unlike the three senior awards. The Bronze Medal could be awarded to NCOs and ... morePrivate Soldiers of allied armies. The Bravery Medals displayed the reigning Kaiser's head on the obverse. In the case of Franz Joseph, he was depicted in a Marshals' uniform and the following inscription was placed around the outer edge of the medal: FRANZ JOSEPH I. V. G. G. KAISER V. OESTERREICH" Franz Joseph I, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria) The obverse showed six crossed regimental colours surrounded by a laurel wreath and the motto: Der Tapferkeit" The diameter of the Gold and large Silver Medal was 40mm. The ribbon of the Bravery Medal was the same white and red ribbon as the Military Merit Cross. An Imperial Decree of the 29th November 1915 introduced bars for repeat awards and these took the form of an 8mm wide smooth rustless iron bar.
