Antique Sterling Silver Virgin Mary Pendant Medal 18" Chain Italy 1920's-30's 7g
Up for bid is this antique sterling silver Virgin Mary pendant and chain. It says 1830 as well as"O Mary. Conceived Without Sin, Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee" The date 1830 stems from a vision of the Virgin Mary in France by Saint Catherine Laboure. She was told by the vision to create a medal with all the things she had been told during the encounter and that people who wore the medals would be protected from all harm. They started making the medals 2 years later, but I don't think this one comes from that far back but it's still pretty old. I found in an estate with a lot of other items from the 1920's and 30's. They are marked"sterling" on the pendant and"925" Italy" on the chain. The Mary figure is raised above the rest of the pendant about 1/8th of an inch. The chain is 18 inches ... morelong and is in excellent condition. The pendant is very heavily patinaed but should shine up nicely with a polish. The chain is not as heavily patinaed but could be polished. Together they weigh in at 7g or 1/4 ounce. The pendant measures 1-1/4" long and 7/8" wide.
