Christ is seated on her arm. Clothes ornamented with silver embossed that emulate embroidery. The background is silver, ornamented in the corners; the borders are orange-red and blue-green in the middle, ornamented with yellow pattern. Age/School: The end of 18th Century. Russian South-West Slavonic. Perhaps, Ukranian. Medium: Hand pained with e gg tempera on leaf of genuine silver. Levkas(gesso) on wood panel. 19 Century Russian Orthodox Icon Vladimir Virgin Copper Over Lay Antique Good
Up for your consideration is a 19th century antique Russian Icon of Vladimir Virgin. The piece is very old but still in good condition. Here is an excerpt from a website about the painting- The Virgin of Vladimir is an illuminous painting from the Early Byzantine era that denotes a significant change in the desired relationship between god and worshipper. The painting follows a period in which the Virgin Mary was most often depicted as a powerful but impersonal entity: the perfect. Sinless Theotokos, or mother of god. These images were dominated by the Panakranta type- Mary as the"Seat of Wisdom" where she is depicted as the throne for her holy son, who sits upon her lap. In contrast. The Virgin of Vladimir is one of the first of the Eleusa, or"tender mercy" type of virgin and child portrayals. Here she lovingly caresses ... moreher son. It is not the child who dominates the scene, but Mary, looking outward at the viewer with a blend of maternal love and sadness. Her child in turn gazes tenderly at his mother. It is this human nature that's captured by the Virgin of Vladimir that makes the painting so striking, both visually and as a historical marker. Rather than the strong but detached version of the holy mother, here is Mary fully human and fully maternal. Likewise.
