Heavy Roman bronze bracelet circa 1st century A.D. from the Province of Judaea. As you can see(with some difficulty, but look particularly at the middle of the bracelet and one end) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series chevrons(V” engraved into the top surface of the bracelet, done in such a manner that the point of the inverted“V” is at the very apex of the slightly crowned band, so one arm of the“V” drops to either side of the band. It was when created a fairly sophisticated and surely costly bracelet. The bracelet was not recovered entirely intact, as you can see, but originally it would have been of a reasonable good size considering the slight build of ancient Romans(the ancient population tended to be considerably smaller than contemporary populations) Originally the two ends of the bracelet would have come close to meeting one another. However the trailing ends of each side by their nature were quite thin and fairly fragile, and susceptible to loss through either breakage or corrosion. The tip of one of the two ends was broken off and lost in antiquity, or simple corroded away. The other side the end was fractured and then

Description: This is a fine example ... moreof the 1835 Malte-Brun map of Central Germany. Centered on Saxony. The map Covers from Rhineland and Westphalia to Bohemia and Brandenberg. A table in the upper right quadrant lists the numbers referring to the enclaves and principalities. In 1180 Duke Henry the Lion fell, and the medieval Duchy of Saxony dissolved. The Saxe-Wittenberg lands were passed among dynasties who took the tribal name Sachsen(Saxons) upstream as they conquered the lands of the Polabian Slavs further up the elbe. The Polabian Slavs had migrated to this area of Germany in the second half of the first millennium A.D. and had been largely assimilated by the Holy Roman empire by the time this map was made. Today, the German government recognizes some 60,000'Sorbs, or descendants of the Polabian Slavs, who have retained their language and culture. Boundaries are color coded according to the imperial circles. The'circles' of Germany are the'imperial circles, administrative units created for tax and defense purposes by the Holy Roman empire, of which these areas were a part. Various cities, towns, rivers, lakes and other topographical details are marked, with relief shown by hachures. $5.99 Shipping Location: Lummi Island, United States TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The First Crusade by Steven Runciman. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover: 201 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2005) When Pope Urban II rose to his feet to address the multitudes gathered before him at the Council of Clermont in 1095 A.D. His appeal was simple: let Western Christendom march to the aid of their brethren in the East. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most tremendous and romantic of Christian expeditions or the last of the barbarian invasions, they remain one of the most exciting and colorful adventure stories in history. The reasons for joining the Crusade varied widely; remittance from penance, a desire to see the Holy Places, or greed for the power and booty to be captured in the East. But the prize at the end of it all, be it spiritual or temporal, of the Holy City of Jerusalem. An army of mounted warriors. Traveling with peasants, merchants and artisans, faced a journey over hostile terrain, meeting with unforeseen antagonism, desert heat, and the constant struggle to feed and water their troops and horses. Their journey's spectacular culmination was the long siege of Jerusalem, at the end of which the Crusaders, by a brilliant tactical maneuver, broke down its defenses and poured into the city which erupted in a bloody massacre. Steven Runciman's"History of the Crusades" is justly acclaimed as the most complete and fascinating account of the historic journey to save the Holy Lands from the Infidel. This abridgement makes accessible to a wider readership one of the most compelling historical narratives. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. $5.99 Shipping Location: Lummi Island, United States The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. Nicely constructed Roman bronze ring with a raised platform, six-sided bezel which at one time would have been engraved. However the ring was worn for such an extended period of time that though the ring is entirely intact and its integrity undiminished, nonetheless whatever engraved design it once bore was worn smooth. It is quite likely that the ring was worn most of a lifetime, as it would take most of a life time to wear an engraved bezel smooth. In fact the extent of the wear is significant enough that it suggests that the ring might have been worn during the lifetime of more than one owner. Perhaps it was a family heirloom handed down between generations. Though the ring was not originally produced to hold a gemstone. The large, flat bezel seemed to invite a gemstone. So we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcrafted Siberian Unakite semi-precious gemstone using jeweler’s epoxy. The gemstone is quite secure, but if you at time in the future wished to remove it, this could
